This quiet senior needs the life of retirement that she deserves.
Queso came into rescue when she was found abandoned in a park, and police dispatch called to see if we could go investigate.
She was left in her carrier with 2 unopened cans of chicken. She was covered in urine and f***s and had 1/2 lb of matting that we shaved off. She was overweight at 17 lbs which is likely why she couldn't groom herself.
She was also microchipped. We contacted the name on the chip. They first claimed they had rehomed her, but when asked about the fact that their phone number had called the rescue earlier in the day but did not leave a phone number, they admited that it was harder to surrender a pet than adopt one. They said they had 9 good years with her but that it would be too expensive to try and get her groomed because she was too stressed and she prefered to hide under the bed. She had never been to a veterinarian in that time as well.
With us, Queso has had full bloodwork and a urinalysis to rule out a UTI since she had so much urine scald on her back end, we wanted to make sure she didn't have an infection from it. She had a skin infection from the matting that was also treated. Much to our relief, her bloodwork and urinalysis looked perfect, and all she needed was for her skin infection to be treated and major weight loss.
Queso is a nervous girl who hides in the safety of her bed. She tucks her head into the bed when she is really nervous which will break your heart. 💔 She enjoys food (clearly!), but we've been working on a diet so she’s a healthier weight.
She enjoys head scratches and will immediately start purring. ❤️ She is a cat that would prefer a quiet, single pet home where she can relax. She’s in the safety of a bathroom by herself at her foster’s so she can gain confidence in her environment, but will likely be a cat who finds a safe place to spend her time. Her foster recently found a toy in her food bowl meaning she was playing 😺 but nothing has been witnessed yet! She’s shaved, but her hair will grow back, and upkeep will be incredibly important so she doesn’t end up matted like when she was found.
This may mean that she requires a sedated groom at the veterinarian twice a year if she is not able to groom herself. A majority of the time, obese animals cannot reach to groom themselves which is what very likely happened in her case. Getting her down to a healthy weight should ensure she can groom herself, but she may need help until she is a better weight, so please be prepared for this.
