October 1 will be here before you know it. Before you start sending arrows downrange, give your entire setup a careful inspection.

Check your strings, cables, limbs, cams, sights, rest, and hardware. Look over every arrow for cracks or damage, and make sure your broadheads are sharp and ready.

A loose screw or worn string is a small problem in September. In October, it could cost you the shot you waited all year to take.

What began with fewer than 4,000 hunters has grown into a tradition shared by more than 300,000 Michigan archers today.

Every October, generations of hunters return to the woods while new hunters experience bow season for the first time. The numbers have changed, but the connection to the land, wildlife and hunting heritage remains.

**PREP LIKE A PRO: Pack a Backup Light**

You’re heading in before sunrise or tracking your way out after dark when your headlamp suddenly dies.

That’s a lousy time to discover the batteries were on their last legs.

Always pack a headlamp and a backup light, plus fresh batteries if your setup requires them. It takes up very little room and can make a big difference when you need to navigate safely in the dark.

Experienced hunters know that redundancy isn’t overpacking. It’s preparation.
