Our ancestors hunted because survival depended on it.

Food. Clothing. Protection. Survival.

Today, most hunters no longer need to hunt.
But we still feel called to it.

For conservation.
For connection to the land.
For time with family and friends.
For the traditions passed down through generations.
For mornings in the woods that reset something deep in your soul.

The purpose has evolved.
The respect remains.

Hunting has always been about more than the harvest.

HSUS’s CEO endorsed convicted dogfighting kingpin Michael Vick getting another pet. After Vick got out of prison, now-former HSUS CEO Wayne Pacelle told the press that he thought Vick “would do a good job as a pet owner.” This startling comment came after Vick’s new employer, the Philadelphia Eagles, made a $50,000 “grant” to HSUS.

That reality surprises a lot of people.

Across the world, regulated hunting programs and conservation funding have helped restore species that were once declining. Anti-poaching initiatives, habitat preservation, wildlife research, and local conservation partnerships are often funded directly by hunters and hunting organizations.

Conservation works best when science leads the conversation.
Not emotion. Not headlines.

Wild turkeys were nearly gone from Michigan by the early 1900s.
Completely wiped out in many areas.

Today? Michigan has one of the strongest turkey populations in the country.

That comeback didn’t happen by accident. It happened because hunters stepped up. Through conservation funding, habitat restoration, regulated hunting, and decades of work, hunters helped bring wild turkeys back from the brink.

That’s the part people forget.

Hunters don’t just take from the outdoors.
They’ve helped rebuild it.

Every gobble echoing through the woods this spring is part of that story.

Be honest.

That first fish of the season…
or that first deer sighting in the fall woods…

Which one actually hits harder?

One wakes you up.
The other takes over your entire brain for months.

You only get to pick one 👇

🎯 First fish
🎯 First deer

Explain your answer. We’re judging a little.

🎯 Tag someone who switches straight from rods to rifles without missing a beat

HSUS receives poor charity-evaluation marks. CharityWatch (formerly the American Institute of Philanthropy) has issued numerous “D” ratings for HSUS for wasteful spending, including in its Winter 2022 guide.

Today isn’t about the long weekend.
It’s not about the sales.
And it’s not just another day off.

Memorial Day is for the men and women who never made it home.

The ones who gave everything so we could live free, hunt free, and pass these traditions on.

Before the grill gets fired up or the boat hits the water… take a moment.
Remember why you have the freedom to do it at all.

We remember. Always.

🎯 Take a minute today to honor someone who served. If you feel comfortable, share their name below.

HSUS’s senior management voiced support for terroristic acts. Longtime HSUS chief policy officer Mike Markarian, who left in 2018, had written, “A perfect example of effective rebellion is an Animal Liberation Front raid on a laboratory.” HSUS food policy director Matt Prescott wrote, “I also believe in the actions of the ALF and other such groups.” HSUS president Wayne Pacelle hired John “J.P.” Goodwin in 1997, the same year Goodwin described himself as “spokesperson for the ALF” while he fielded media calls in the wake of an ALF arson attack at a California meat processing plant. In 1997, when asked by reporters for a reaction to an ALF arson fire at a farmer’s feed co-op in Utah (which nearly killed a family sleeping on the premises), Goodwin replied, “We’re ecstatic.” As of 2023, Goodwin still worked for HSUS as a senior director.

Check out this great story about several years of wild Turkey hunting by Ed Edwards!

For nearly the first half of my life, it was beyond my dreams to see a wild turkey, let alone hunt and eventually kill one. Things change. In the early 1980’s, turkeys were released in Southern Michigan, adapted, and reproduced so well that a limited spring season was established within ten years.

The tom was now in range, stopping to my right, and did not look like he was going to advance any closer. It was now crunch time!
