Thank you to the Gloucester Daily Times and columnist Carl Gustin for highlighting GEF's work on the O'Maley Courtyard Project in today's paper, and thanks to Linzee Coolidge for serving as our honorary campaign chair and advocate!

Carl writes: "...work is underway to turn a barren, concrete and unwelcoming space at the entrance to the O’Maley Innovation Middle School into a fully functional part of the O’Maley campus. Once completed, the courtyard will expand the impressive educational opportunities offered at O’Maley by becoming a gathering place for shared experiences among students, teachers, and community groups.

Among the early donors is Linzee Coolidge, an active supporter of many major Gloucester and Cape Ann projects, including the new YMCA, and a champion for public education...At a recent event, he invited attendees to “Imagine the dull, underutilized concrete space becoming a destination where students learn and play outdoors, educators teach in new ways, and the community gathers for events, performances, and celebrations. Together, we can create a vibrant space that generations of Gloucester youth will benefit from every day.”"

Last week GEF champions Gib + Sarah Carey hosted an event at their magnificent Magnolia home, Stillington Hall, to share the O'Maley Courtyard Project with a crowd of friends and supporters. Folks left inspired by the vision to overhaul this concrete slab and transform it into an outdoor hub for teaching, learning, recreation and community-building. Most common question: "When will it be done?!?" (2028, we hope!)

Thank you to donors Linzee Coolidge, Maggie Rosa, and Michael Baker for their rousing remarks about why they support this; 9th grader Franny Goddess for providing an impassioned student perspective; GHS Music, Cole Lundquist, and the GHS Jazz Combo for entertaining us; Melissa Donati for feeding us; and GHS student photographer Shane Widtfeldt for these great photos!

Recently Plum Cove parent Jack LoPiccolo visited O’Maley’s Science Central with GEF and, along with City Councilor Scott Memhard, made a KILLER sail car prototype!

Who says middle school can’t be fun? ⛵️ 🚘

It’s the Gloucester Toddler Halloween Parade on Main Street today! We 🧡🖤🧡 this annual event because a) it’s so darn cute, b) it’s awesome to see our Main Street neighbors greeting all the kids outside their shops and offices, and c) it gives us a chance to share information about GEF with the next generation of GPS families!

Check out GHS science teacher Eric Leigh, Gender Equity in STEM Club coordinator Roseann Vidal, and GHS Class of 2022/Harvard University Class of 2026's Olivia Hogan-Lopez at the The Women's Fund of Essex County grantee recognition breakfast! Thanks for representing GPS and GEF at this event, and for all the work you've done to:

✅ establish this club in 2021 (Olivia, as a GHS senior!);
✅ grow it over the past five years (Roseann, who has been its guiding force!); and
✅ serve as a faculty advisor (Mr. Leigh, who has encouraged so many of his students to participate!)

Congratulations to GEF Board Member and neighbor, friend, and activist extraordinaire Maiuza Alves on her recent recognition by the Commonwealth for her dedication to the Brazilian and Latino communities. GEF is so fortunate to count her among our supporters and advocates. Her commitment to equity and excellence for Gloucester students is such an asset to our organization and the city. Parabéns, Maiuza!

Super awesome to see this packed homeroom session for the GHS Gender Equity in STEM Club! Did you know GEF recently secured three more years of funding for this program totaling $42,000, thanks to grants from The Women’s Fund of Essex County and Applied Materials? We did, thanks to leadership from coordinators Roseann Vidal and Eric Leigh, and advocacy from student participants!

GPS Meet the Teacher Night #7 of 7 is tonight at GHS! Stop by the GEF table to say hi to student advisors Andrew and Bella (both Class of 2027), hear about the programs we fund, and pick up some GEF swag. Our student advisors recommended we get GEF car magnets and water bottle stickers this year; we got ‘em, now get yours!
