This February, GloArts is expanding our partnership with the !

We’re continuing Studio SFL with .aisling for another four Wednesday afternoons of art making, this time focused on altered books, AND are thrilled to be adding “Understanding Shakespeare,” a Saturday morning workshop series presented by .

Experience the world’s most famous love story through movement, sound, and play with Lanes Coven Theater Co, a founding partner of Gloucester Center for the Arts. This isn't a lecture—it's an interactive workshop that uses theater techniques to bring Shakespeare's language to life.

This four-class series, taught by Justin Genna & Lily Narbonne, uses theater and acting tools to help participants understand Romeo & Juliet and the overall rhythm of Shakespearean language. You do not have to be an actor to participate! These lessons are based on pedagogy originally designed for students in English Language classes. Every class consists of a warm-up, game, exercise, and main activity. For the best experience, we recommend being available for all four dates. Registration required. Please register for each workshop separately. Dates are 2/7, 2/14, 2/28, and 3/7. Space is limited.

As the sun sets and the Coast Guard suspends their search, our hearts are with the families, friends, and communities of the F/V Lily Jean. Gloucester aches tonight.

As the Gloucester Fishermen’s Memorial reads, “They that go down to the sea in ships, that do business in great waters; These see the works of the Lord, and his wonders in the deep.”

It has been exactly one year this week since the first conversations began to create the Gloucester Center for the Arts.

In the past year, our incredible team have toured five different potential sites, been in touch with over 60 artists interested in renting space, begun building an online presence, and filed and received all the paperwork to become a federally recognized non-profit.

This is in addition to running the incredible cultural programming you know and love from MAGMA Gloucester, Lanes Coven Theater Co, Alexandra Grace Music Studio, Brassfed Nation, and Hearth Art Studios.

Right now, we’re continuing to work on all the administrative, financial, and interpersonal infrastructure that will help us hit the ground running as soon as we sign a lease on our future home. We’re committed to making sure that we get everything set up correctly to best serve our creative community.

If you love this vision as much as we do, we hope you’ll consider donating to the cause via www.gloarts.org/donate, following along on Instagram and Facebook at , and telling everyone you know about our new vision for a multidisciplinary arts center in downtown Gloucester.

Thanks to the Gloucester Daily Times for highlighting our “Studio SFL” workshops at the Sawyer Free Library! We’ve had so much fun in the beautiful new community room making block prints and collages with our neighbors. Stop by the library to read the article for yourself 🗞️

Registration is almost completely full for our upcoming weeks, but we’re hard at work with our library partners to offer more free creative programming!

For anyone with a teen or tween in their life, join us tomorrow at the library from 1:30 -3:30 pm for “Make Your Own Ice Sculpture.”

We’ll be making a collaborative ice sculpture for the 5th Annual Gloucester So Salty Festival, an annual program started by GloArts Executive Director Miranda Aisling during her time at the Cape Ann Museum!

During the workshop, we’ll be making elements for the collaborative ice sculpture using food coloring, natural plants, and more. We’ll also talk about how to assemble our final sculpture. Once the elements freeze, attendees are invited to come back on Friday, January 23 from 2:30-4:00 to help put out our ice sculpture art installation outside the library!

Patrons ages 11-19 (grades 6-12) are welcome to participate in this event. Space is limited, so registration is required.

“Collaboration is essential within the arts - by supporting and coming together with this group of local artists, we feel we are not only helping carve a space for the arts on Cape Ann to grow, but we are also paving the way for artistic nourishment, affordability and accessibility, collaboration, and an assurance that being a musician/artist is still doable for the generations to come. Many of my local artist friends have moved out of Gloucester due to the lack of affordable space. Let's do everything we can to ensure Gloucester remains the artistic town that we take pride in being a part of!!” - Alexandra Grace, founder of Alexandra Grace Music Studio

Alexandra Grace is a singer-songwriter, artist, and educator from Gloucester, MA. She is a graduate of Berklee College of Music, where she earned her B.M. in Songwriting & Performance with a minor in Psychology. She and her students have performed at many venues, including selling out the Shalin Liu Performance Center, The Cut, Off Cabot, and more. Alexandra is a trained instrumentalist, with 20 years of practice on the piano and 10 years on the guitar. Her primary instrument is voice.

Alexandra Grace Music Studio is a music school located on Cape Ann. With the dream of giving young creatives a place to make music, write songs, perform for the community, and make lifelong friendships, Alexandra started the studio in 2021. Currently teaching about 100 students, our team of music educators aim to inspire and create a community of artists and musicians of all ages and genres.

“GloArts would make a huge impact on our music school by helping us keep the top tier levels of music education that we offer accessible and affordable for all while we continue to provide a space for young musicians and artists to come together and make music. Running a small business in a place that has become difficult to afford puts a lot of pressure on the arts and arts education. Between rising rent and utility costs, lack of funding, and severe lack of available spaces, local creatives are suffering from these lack of resources.” - Jaden Chris, co-founder of Alexandra Grace Music Studio

Jaden Chris is a multi-instrumentalist, producer, and educator originally from New Jersey, but now a resident of Gloucester, MA. He is a graduate of Berklee College of Music, where he earned his B.M. in Professional Music, with concentrations in Guitar Performance and Jazz Composition. He started teaching in 2018 while still at Berklee with the hopes of making music more accessible to all. He tailors his curriculum for each student to fit their learning needs, goals, and musical passions.
