Seaside Sustainability

Seaside Sustainability Seaside Sustainability's mission is to advocate, educate, and deliver tangible solutions to advance environmental stewardship.

Seaside Sustainability is an organization that provides adventure education opportunities through hands-on experiential programming and sport skill building. Beginning with a focus on personal health and the mindset that taking care of oneself extends directly to the environment, Seaside Sustainability programs encourage participants to nurture a relationship with local land and seascapes. As emph

asized by the Association of Experiential Learning, Seaside Sustainability programs provide the opportunity to develop one's learning potential beyond mere concepts and procedures; this hands-on approach challenges actively-engaged learners to take initiative, make connections, practice authentic reflection and to construct meaning from novel experiences. Through applying critical thinking and communication skills in a collaborative setting, our investigation-based programs will engage participants and provide them with essential skills that will empower them for the rest of their lives. Seaside Sustainability is also working on environmental projects to benefit the community. These projects include Drain SmArt, a ban on plastic bags and polystyrene, and a Marine Debris Collection. Drain SmArt is a project in Salem, MA in which artists create creative murals painted upon drains. The goal of this project is to draw attention to the connection of drains to the ocean and their ability to transport pollutants into the marine environment. The ban on plastic bags and polystyrene is specific to the City of Gloucester and aims to reduce plastic pollution and promote more environmentally friendly alternatives. The Marine Debris Collection in Gloucester, MA aims to eradicate marine pollution.

As the 2026 Student Commencement Speaker at Unity Environmental University, Tami spoke to graduates about perseverance, lifelong learning, and the responsibility of future environmental leaders to help shape a better world. Sharing this moment at a ceremony featuring Bill Nye made it even more special.

Tami continues to be an important part of Seaside’s story, and we’re proud to recognize her here. 💙

New research suggests microplastics may be doing more than polluting marine ecosystems; they may also be interfering with the ocean’s ability to absorb carbon dioxide. According to the study, microplastics can disrupt plankton, microbes, and the ocean’s biological carbon pump, a process that helps transfer carbon from the atmosphere into deeper ocean layers. The authors also note that microplastics may directly contribute to greenhouse gas emissions as they degrade.

For Seaside, this is another reminder that plastic pollution is not only a waste issue. It is also connected to ocean health, climate systems, and the long-term resilience of marine ecosystems.

The fight against plastic pollution is also part of the climate conversation ✊
