Just one week until our first public Tour de Turtles release of the year in Florida! 🌞

Join the Sea Turtle Conservancy along with our partners, Anna Maria Island Turtle Watch & Shorebird Monitoring, AMITW and Hurricane Hanks, as we release a satellite tagged loggerhead turtle on the morning of June 29 or 30 around 8 a.m. near Coquina Beach, FL.* The event is FREE and open to the public!

Our team will begin setting up on the beach around 7 a.m. and you are welcome to stop by before release time to purchase a t-shirt ($25), get an up-close look at the turtle, and ask the turtle team any questions. Just look for the blue tent!

**We are satellite-tagging a nesting sea turtle, so we will not have the exact date or location of the release until the night before. Visit the event page below to get the latest updates**

Introducing our first swimmer in the 2026 Leatherback Tour de Turtles race, Jennifer Slowpez! She was named by her sponsor, Fahlo.

She was satellite tagged on May 9 in Panama, measured 144.1 cm in length, and laid 71 fertile eggs.

Stay tuned for updates on her and to meet the other swimmers in this year's virtual race.

With Father’s Day coming up, let’s talk about sea turtle dads!

🔮 They are mysterious. Unlike female sea turtles, who return to the beach once they’ve reached reproductive maturity to lay their eggs, male sea turtles almost never set flipper on land again. This makes it harder for scientists to study them, though recent DNA research is helping to unveil some of their secrets.

🐢 They are shaped slightly differently. When mature, male sea turtles have a much longer tail than female turtles, which contains their reproductive organs.

❗ They are under threat. Eggs that incubate in warmer sand will result in more female sea turtle hatchlings, and as global temperatures increase with climate change, some beaches are beginning to produce almost all female sea turtles.

A heartbreaking reminder from South Walton Turtle Watch💔 Something as small as a beach chair left out overnight can mean life or death for sea turtles.

Sea turtles are a keystone species, large marine reptiles, and part-time beach artists 🎨

When sea turtles crawl onto the beach to lay their eggs, they leave distinct markings on the sand that can tell us what species visited, and sometimes a bit about the turtle herself!

🐢 Leatherback sea turtles leave wide, symmetrical tracks with a straight, heavy tail drag down the middle.

🐢 Green turtles also make symmetrical tracks but with a thin, straight tail drag down the middle with tiny "v" marks.

🐢 Loggerhead sea turtle tracks are asymmetrical, with alternating comma-shaped swirls.
