We are a non profit organization with a mission to support and help one woman at a time. Each chapter has one recipient a month.

Monthly Girls-Night-Out Dinners

At these dinners, which are usually at a local restaurant, we honor women who are experiencing some kind of irreplaceable loss. This could be a terminal illness, loss of an immediate family member, or some other non-material loss or tragedy. The dinner is a time to show support and encouragement to her. One way we do this is by presenting her with a monetary gift which is a collection of money that the women in attendance have given. The money is collected in a bowl, and 100% of it goes directly to the recipient. It is a suggested $10 gift: some give more, and some give less. The money itself is not intended to be the main gift; it is just a tangible sign of the love and support behind it. At the dinner, the recipient randomly chooses the next month’s recipient from a box of nomination forms that have been filled out by those in attendance at the dinner.

Cheers to 7 Years, HOW Los Banos!

Today we celebrate the 7th Anniversary of Helping One Woman - Los Banos!

Since 2019, HOW Los Banos has continued to bring people together around one woman at a time. Seven years of dinners, stories, full tables, generous hearts, and a community willing to show up when someone needs to know she is surrounded by people who care.

Behind every dinner are Chapter Leaders and volunteers who put in the work, local businesses and individuals who contribute, and attendees who continue to fill the room. Thank you to everyone who has been part of the Los Banos Chapter over these past seven years and helped carry the HOW mission forward.

And their next opportunity to come together is just around the corner. On October 21st, HOW Los Banos will gather at M & M Italian Restaurant to honor October recipient Gloria Leyva. Who brought you to your first HOW dinner?

Maybe it was a friend, a coworker, a family member, or someone who simply said, “Come with me.”

For many of us, that first invitation is how Helping One Woman begins.

You don’t have to know the recipient. You don’t have to know everyone in the room. You simply have to be willing to show up and be part of something special for one woman.

What does showing up look like?

Sometimes it’s filling a seat at a HOW dinner.

Sometimes it’s listening as a woman shares her story.

It might be buying a raffle ticket, bidding on an auction item, bringing a friend, or simply offering a hug.

And yes, it’s bringing that $10 monetary recipient gift.

There isn’t just one way to show your support at a Helping One Woman dinner. Every person who walks through the door becomes part of a room filled with encouragement, compassion, and people choosing to be there for one woman.

Showing up looks different for everyone. What matters is that we show up.

What happens after a HOW dinner?

The tables are cleared. The raffle prizes go home. The lights are turned off. But what happened in that room doesn’t simply end when the evening does.

A HOW recipient leaves knowing that people showed up for her. Some may be family and friends. Others may have walked through the doors without knowing her at all.

For one evening, an entire room came together to remind one woman that she is seen, cared for, and surrounded by people willing to show up.

That feeling is at the heart of Helping One Woman…at a time.

Every HOW story starts with someone saying her name.

Before there is a dinner, before a room fills with people, and before a community gathers around a recipient, someone takes the first step and nominates her.

HOW recipients are nominated at a Helping One Woman dinner by someone who knows her story and wants to see her surrounded by support during an irreplaceable loss.

There may be a woman in your life right now whose story deserves to be heard. Someone others may not realize is going through a life-altering season. Someone whose name may never make it onto a nomination form unless you write it down.

Attend a HOW dinner. Pick up a nomination form. Say her name.

Because every HOW story starts with a nomination.

Our HOW family is deeply saddened by the passing of our dear friend, mentor, and consultant, Ann Vermel.

Ann was there in the beginning, generously sharing her wisdom, guidance, and heart as she helped us build the foundation of Helping One Woman. Though she was our consultant for only a few years, she became a forever friend.

We thought the world of her and will always be grateful for all she gave to HOW.

Thank you, Ann. You will be deeply missed and always remembered.

One dinner can look different in every community.

Some HOW chapters gather in community halls. Others meet in restaurants, event spaces, or rooms overlooking a golf course. Some dinners fill a large room, while others are smaller and more intimate.

The tables may look different.
The meals may be different.
The communities are different.

But across all of our chapters, the reason we gather is the same.

Once a month, each Helping One Woman chapter comes together to celebrate and support one woman with a meaningful connection to their community who is experiencing an irreplaceable loss.

No matter where we gather or what the evening looks like, it comes back to the same simple purpose:

Helping One Woman...at a time.

Our motto has changed, but the heart behind it hasn’t.

Helping One Woman recognizes that times change, and what $10 could buy when HOW began isn’t quite the same today. So, we’ve updated our motto to focus less on a specific dollar amount and more on what happens when women come together:

One woman can buy another woman lunch.
Ten women can buy another woman’s groceries.
One hundred women can make a real difference in another woman’s life.

What hasn’t changed? At every HOW dinner, we still ask each attendee to bring a $10 monetary recipient gift, given directly to that month’s recipient.

Ten dollars may not buy what it once did, but when a room full of women each brings a recipient gift, those individual acts of kindness add up.

That has always been the idea behind HOW, one woman helping another woman…at a time.
