Florence Elks Lodge #820

Florence Elks Lodge #820 A private club & charitable foundation that donates thousands of dollars to local Florence charities. WHO ARE THE ELKS? Good question, and thanks for asking.

The short answer is this:
- A fraternal order with nearly a million members and a 150-plus year history.
- A network of nearly 2000 lodges in communities all over the country.
- A generous charitable foundation that each year gives millions in scholarships, an inspiration to youth, a friend to veterans and more. Through our history of now over 150 years, Elks nationally have contribute

d over $675 million back into the communities we serve. Currently, our annual charitable contributions total $80 million. This may go to causes listed as above, or other worthy local causes. Here in the Shoals area, Florence Lodge #820 provides needed items for local schools, children's causes, Veterans programs, first responders, victims of domestic violence and more. Today, we commemorate Flag Day, which celebrates the symbolism and history of the American flag on June 14.

The U.S. has celebrated the adoption of the Stars and Stripes in a variety of ways when President Woodrow Wilson issued a proclamation establishing the June 14 as Flag Day in May 1916. These celebrations include flying the flag in front of residences, participating in parades, and holding other patriotic events. Several states and numerous cities had begun commemorating the day before to 1916.

Coincidentally, The U.S. Army was also founded on 14 June 1775, when the Continental Congress authorized enlistment of riflemen to serve the United Colonies for one year. Happy Birthday to the US Army as well!!

πŸ‡ΊπŸ‡Έ D-Day - Remembering the Heroes

"Soldiers, Sailors and Airmen of the Allied Expeditionary Force: You are about to embark upon the Great Crusade, toward which we have striven these many months. The eyes of the world are upon you. The hopes and prayers of liberty-loving people everywhere march with you."
β€” General Dwight D. Eisenhower, address to the troops, June 5, 1944

With these words, General Eisenhower prepared over 156,000 Allied troops for the mission that would change the course of history. On June 6, 1944, they launched the largest amphibious invasion ever attempted, storming the beaches of Normandy to begin the liberation of Europe.

The success of Operation Overlord came at a staggering cost. More than 4,400 Allied soldiers were killed on D-Day alone.

Their courage and sacrifice lit the path to victory and gave hope to a world in darkness. Today, we remember them with deep gratitude and solemn respect.

Armed Forces Day is a joint celebration of all six branches of the U.S. military: Air Force, Army, Coast Guard, Marine Corps, Navy, and the newly created Space Force. The day honors all people currently serving in the U.S. armed forces. This includes the men and women who have served or are serving in the Army, Navy, Marine Corps, Air Force, Space Force and Coast Guard, including the National Guard and Reserve components.

Recognized on the third Saturday in May we honor and respect the Soldiers, Sailors, Airmen, Marines, and Coast Guardsmen serving our nation.
