With the unofficial end of summer near, our professors are recapping their summer.

In June, Dr. Brad McKinnon ventured on a two-week educational tour of northern France and London. The group of travelers visited historic and cultural sites including Mont-Saint-Michel Abbey, Omaha Beach, Normandy American Cemetery, Château de Chenonceau, Notre Dame Cathedral, the Louvre, the Eiffel Tower, the British Museum, the British Library, and Shakespeare’s Globe Theatre. They also had the opportunity to meet with a local congregation in the village of La Chapelle-au-Riboul, France.

Dr. McKinnon also conducted historical research in Austria, Germany, and Switzerland. He was nominated and approved to serve on the Board of Trustees for the Center for Swedenborgian Studies in Berkeley, California, which is part of the Graduate Theological Union.

It was a summer marked by teaching, scholarship, travel, and new opportunities, all contributing to Dr. McKinnon’s continued work as a professor and scholar here at HCU.

With the unofficial end of summer near, our professors are recapping their summer.

For Dr. Jeremy Barrier, this summer took him across Europe as he continued his Alexander von Humboldt Fellowship at the Beyond Canon Centre for Advanced Studies at the University of Regensburg in Germany.

After completing his fellowship, Dr. Barrier returned home on August 5, having made the most of his time abroad. He:
Visited the Church of Christ in Lausanne, Switzerland
Visited the Stratford Church of Christ in England
Visited the Church of Christ in Dundee, Scotland, where he had the opportunity to preach
Attended the SNTS conference in Durham, England, bringing together leading New Testament scholars from around the world, where he was joined at the conference by HCU alumnus Dax Holt.

To top it off, his research reached an exciting milestone! After completing his fellowship, Dr. Barrier submitted his research to Early Christianity, one of the leading journals in his field, and it was accepted for publication! 🎉

And, of course, there was a little adventure along the way. Dr. Barrier climbed two mountains this summer: the Watzmann in the German Alps with his son, Samuel, and the Matterhorn in Switzerland, making it most of the way up!

Dr. Barrier's summer was certainly a chapter worth remembering. Now, he's bringing those experiences and knowledge back to the HCU classroom.

Not Alone: Infertility & Mental Health. A women’s mental health forum presented by Radiant

1 in 6 couples experience infertility. Yet for so many, the journey feels lonely.

Infertility affects more than just the body. It can bring grief, anxiety, depression, isolation, strained relationships, and countless questions. If this is part of your story, you don't have to carry it alone.

Join us on Tuesday, September 29, at 6:00 p.m. in Franklin Auditorium for an evening of hope, education, and practical tools to help you cope and learn how to support others.

You'll hear honest stories from women who have walked the difficult road of infertility and understand its emotional impact firsthand. A panel of professionals will also share valuable insights, practical coping strategies, and resources to help you navigate this journey. Afterward, attendees can participate in one of three breakout sessions for deeper conversation and connection.

Whether you're experiencing infertility yourself or want to learn how to better support a friend or loved one, this forum is for you.

This event is FREE and open to women.

Student Spotlight: Dylan Surratt

Meet Dylan Surratt, an HCU senior who is completing his bachelor’s degree and preparing for the next step in his ministry journey!

Dylan graduated with an Associate of Arts last year and plans to continue his education at Heritage Christian University by pursuing a Master of Ministry with a focus on pastoral counseling. Afterward, he hopes to serve in either youth ministry or associate ministry.

Dylan’s journey at HCU actually began as an audit student. After falling in love with the university, he decided to officially enroll the following semester—and he hasn’t looked back!

Dylan worships and serves with the Pleasant Valley Church of Christ in Killen, Alabama. He has also embraced leadership opportunities at HCU, currently serving as SGA President, Alumni Association Secretary, and Chapel Assistant to Mr. Zack Martin.

One of Dylan’s favorite things about HCU is the close-knit atmosphere. He loves being able to build personal relationships with his professors and considers several of them mentors. For Dylan, HCU is a place where he can sit down with his professors, talk, learn, and grow.

Outside of school and ministry, Dylan enjoys Disney, politics, collecting political memorabilia, working outdoors and at church, and spending time with his family. One of his favorite passages of Scripture is 1 Corinthians 13:1–13.

Dylan’s advice to anyone considering HCU is simple: “Make the jump and try it.” While it may take a semester or two to get used to everything, he believes you’ll come to love HCU just as much as he does.

We’re grateful to have Dylan as part of the HCU family and excited to see where God leads him next! 💚
