Western Mass Climbers Coalition

Western Mass Climbers Coalition https://linktr.ee/climbgneiss The WMCC recognizes that the various types of climbing (i.e. traditional, sport, and bouldering) are all valid.

The WMCC builds grassroots support for climbers concerns and promotes the natural resources of Western Massachusetts for outdoor recreation through environmental stewardship and education. The WMCC does not seek to promote one type of climbing over another, but rather strives to preserve the unique character of climbing that has developed within each of the climbing areas in Western Massachusetts.

Next time you’re at Hanging Mountain, check out the new sign for the Corps Wall!

What’s cool about this sign? The Army Corps of Engineers are proud of our partnership for this special resource and wanted to make a sign featuring both of our organizations’ logos. It took several years to formalize this partnership, but hard work and persistence on both sides meant we were able to reopen climbing access to this amazing wall.

The WMCC is working to build partnerships with other organizations to secure climbing access in other areas as well. We can’t just do this with a few volunteers; we need all climbers to demonstrate that we are a responsible user group that takes care of the areas we recreate, follows guidelines, and respects closures if closures are in place. It’s up to all of us to prioritize long term access over a single day of climbing.

Join the WMCC board of directors at Four Star Brewery on Friday, Oct. 16th!

There will be a short presentation about the new parking lot updates and a discussion about access to a place we know and love, Farley Ledge.

There will be wood fired pizza by Flis Market and Four Star Brewery will donate $1 to the WMCC for every beer sold that night. We can't wait to see you!

We just renewed our affiliate partnership with the ! The Access Fund provides vital support for Local Climbing Organization's like us; from expertise and legal advice, to grants and the Climbing Conservation Loan program that made it possible for us to purchase Hanging Mountain and the Rock Property where we will build the new Farley parking lot. The Access Fund also advocates for climbing at the national level, ensuring that we can continue to climb safely on our national public lands.

Make sure to support the Access Fund as you do your local climbing organizations. We have a joint membership program which makes it easy to do both - just make sure to choose the Western Massachusetts Climbers Coalition when you check out.

We need your help to finish up work on the approach to a new crag at Hanging Mountain! The 'South Wall' is the next crag after the Beech and a lot of work has been done there already, but more steps and a belay platform are needed before this wall is ready for the public.

Join us this Sunday or on August 22. Volunteers will need to be prepared to do stonework on steep terrain.

✅ Another successful WMCC board retreat! Thank you to the Northfield Mountain Recreation Center for hosting us in their lovely conference room. With a mix of old and new faces and lots of passion for working through access issues at places like Farley and Great Barrington, it’s clear the WMCC is healthy and thriving. Thank you to all the board members and volunteers who are working hard behind the scenes to make the big wins possible!
