Using Indigenous Circle Practice and deep listening, we will share openly with one another, hold silence, and strive to transform our communities through our connection to our ancestors. We will gather in a circle on Earth Day, holding our feelings about the violation of our planet – expressing our grief, reaching for hope, and sharing our visions of a world transformed. Together we will be strengthened to face the road ahead. Under the sensitive guidance of Strong Oak, and her many years of experience with Circle Practice, the group will honor the reverence of the space, listen for voices of ancestors and share what lays on our hearts. You are invited to bring all your feelings and to share openly. You will be fortified for the work that lies before us. Everyone warmly welcome, join us.

This three-part class series will explore lessons and resources from Teaching Palestine: Lessons, Stories, Voices. The series is for all seeking to learn more about Palestine, but especially educators and organizers. If you are an educator, you will leave with practical ideas to help you build a unit around this crucial subject. If you are an activist, you will be able to bring participatory experiences exploring the history of Palestine and Israel back to your organization.

The Stolen Beam Series is a 5-session course of educational engagement and personal reflection on the topic of reparations for African Americans, with a focus on the legacy of African enslavement and 400 years of anti-Black racism. We consider what was stolen, what may be owed, historical examples of reparations, current challenges and controversies, and faith-based reparations statements and examples. The class materials offer participants a fuller perspective on US history, one that many of us never learned, that centers on the historical and lived experience of African-Americans. The class asks participants to consider the case for reparations as a remedy for past injustice and continued harms to descendants of enslaved African people, and as a concrete response to the ongoing racial wealth gap in this country. Finally, the Stolen Beam series offers participants an opportunity to engage heads and hearts, in a spirit of deep listening and reflection, honest and respectful sharing, that for some becomes a journey of discovery and transformation. The class offers an opportunity to study and reflect on some of the writings of prominent thought leaders on the topic of reparations for African Americans as a path to restorative justice. It reviews the case for reparations, arguments against reparations, various definitions of reparations, U.S. House Resolution 40, faith-related cases for reparations, perspectives including post-Holocaust history, and various models of reparations programs, past, present and future. The Stolen Beam has been offered throughout the U.S., including in Evanston, IL, Cotati, CA, Longmeadow, MA, Pelham, MA, Amherst, MA, Northampton, MA, and finally, at a divinity school in Charlotte, NC. It was placed on the Reconstructing Judaism website for use by congregations interested in learning more about reparations for African Americans, and was used by their Board of Governors. The Stolen Beam has been co-sponsored by the African Heritage Reparations Assembly (AHRA) of Amherst, MA as part of their educational campaign.

This class, taught by the director of the Truth School, who is a white woman, is a departure from our school policy of having all TS classes taught by people of color or biracial pairs. In this class, Andrea will speak to and with white people specifically (although everyone is welcome to attend). Basing her comments on the book Play the Game, Change the Game, Leave the Game by Robert Livingston, Andrea will explore Livingston’s theory that racism operates like an addiction for so many white people: hard to admit and even harder to quit. In this class we will ask the question: what will it take for white people to kick the habit? Is that even possible? Why do white people seem to kick the habit for a while and then relapse? If white people are addicted to white supremacy, what are effective strategies to name this addiction, wrestle with this addiction, and enter “recovery” that has fewer set-backs. Your voice and perspectives are welcome. This will be a lively discussion.

The class is taught by two medics for Street Medics Austin, a nonpartisan 501c3 out of Austin, Texas, who provide protest first aid, unhoused outreach, and community trainings such as this one.
