It was a tough weekend for honeysuckle and dead trees at Hudson Park. A trained crew took down some dead standing dangerous trees that overlooked the fairways while the rest of the amateurs took out some invasive honeysuckle. We tried something different with all of our debris and think it turned out pretty cool.…
Introducing the dead hedge! The dead hedge is made up of posts set in the ground that create a virtual pen that can hold branches of varying size. The benefits are:
1. It create a natural border.
2. Creates a habitat for wildlife.
3. No waiting for public works to come haul brush away.
4. A designated place to drop other limbs that fall during storms, high winds.
Be sure to check them out on hole 2, 4, 10/11 and 18. If they are deemed successful, you may see them in other places throughout the course.
Those who worry about opening up the course too much, this has opened up the canopy and will give the native trees a better chance to flourish. We also have a shipment of seedlings due to arrive in late February from the Missouri Dept. of Conservation/Missouri Stream Team Goodbye honeysuckle, hello bald cypress, black gum, possumhaw and more.
While there was a lot of cutting and slashing there was also planting going on. We worked with Paul Schneider and Todd Lazar who planted a tree in memory of Tom Watkins. Make sure you stop by and take a look.
