REMEMBERING 25 YEARS LATER

On September 11, 2001, heroes emerged in many forms.
Alongside firefighters, police officers, emergency personnel, and volunteers were more than 300 search-and-rescue dogs whose extraordinary abilities helped their handlers search amid conditions few could have imagined.
For those of us in veterinary medicine, their story holds special meaning. We understand the trust that exists between animals and the people who care for and work beside them. On that day and throughout the difficult work that followed, these remarkable dogs demonstrated just how powerful that partnership can be.

Today, the Alabama Veterinary Medical Association honors their service while remembering every life lost and every family forever affected by September 11.

Twenty-five years have passed. We still remember.

Water troughs, farm ponds, and slow-moving creeks can quickly become lethal during August heatwaves due to toxic blue-green algae blooms. These blooms often look like green pea soup, spilled paint, or a thick scum on the water's surface.

Ingesting even a small amount of contaminated water can cause severe, life-threatening liver or neurological toxicity in dogs, horses, and cattle alike. To protect your animals, ensure livestock troughs are regularly dumped, scrubbed, and kept free of stagnant buildup, and never let pets swim in or drink from scummy natural water.

If you suspect any of your animals have been exposed, rinse them immediately with clean water and seek emergency veterinary care right away.
