The backpacks are packed and a new school year is officially kicking off! While you are checking off your back-to-school lists, don't forget to schedule a wellness checkup for your four-legged family members.

A quick late-summer veterinary visit ensures your pets are up to date on vaccinations and parasite prevention before the busy fall schedule takes over. It is also the perfect time to talk to your vet about separation anxiety as the house suddenly goes quiet during the day.

Beat the fall rush and keep your companions healthy all school year long! Find a trusted local ALVMA veterinarian near you at www.alvma.com

The ALVMA was proud to be part of the Welcome to the Profession event held Wednesday, August 5, at Auburn College of Veterinary Medicine. This special evening brought together first-year veterinary students from both Auburn and Tuskegee Colleges of Veterinary Medicine as they begin their journey toward earning their DVM.

We are honored to support and encourage these future veterinarians as they embark on this exciting chapter, and we look forward to being part of their professional journey for years to come! 🐾

ASBVME nomination deadline extended to August 18! 🚨

We're still seeking nominations for two vital vacancies on the Alabama State Board of Veterinary Medical Examiners: one DVM position and one Layperson position, with terms beginning this fall.

The oversight committee is specifically prioritizing nominees from Congressional Districts 5 and 6 (based on home mailing address) β€” if that's you, or a colleague comes to mind, now's the time to act.

For the DVM vacancy, qualified nominees must be legal Alabama residents actively practicing at least 35 hours per week, with a valid license held for at least five consecutive years prior to appointment.

Swipe through the slides for full criteria. All required materials β€” the signed nomination form, CV, and two letters of reference from ALVMA members β€” must be submitted to [email protected] by August 18, 2026.

Thank you for your commitment to the leadership of our profession.

πŸŽ‰ Congratulations, Dr. Michael Zimlich! πŸŽ‰

We're proud to celebrate Dr. Zimlich, a longtime member of organized veterinary medicine and a true example of what it means to serve our profession and our community.

As a founder and board member of Krewe de Kindness on the Alabama Gulf Coast, Dr. Zimlich has helped bring accessibility to citizens with physical challenges β€” from a special Mardi Gras Ball to beach mats at Dauphin Island's public parks, giving those with walkers, wheelchairs, and crutches the chance to feel the sand and hear the surf.

Thank you, Dr. Zimlich, for representing all that is good and great about our profession.

πŸŽ‰ Congratulations, Becki Vance! πŸŽ‰

We're proud to celebrate Becki Vance, of the Alabama Veterinary Medical Foundation, whose dedication has helped shape the Foundation's success for years.

Becki was fundamental in launching ALVMF's spay-neuter program alongside Dr. TC Branch, and her involvement touches nearly every corner of the Foundation's work. From her years in veterinary sales and her time with Hand in Paw's animal-assisted therapy program, to her role as chairperson of the Alabama Animal Hall of Fame nominations, Becki shows up for this profession again and again.

Thank you, Becki, for being a true pillar of the veterinary community across Alabama. 🐾

Nominated by Susan Parsons, Babette Authement, and Frances Kendrick

Nominations close in 5 days β€” help shape veterinary medicine in Alabama!

The ALVMA still needs nominees for two state board oversight committee seats β€” one DVM and one Layperson position, with terms starting this fall.

We're especially short on nominees from Congressional Districts 5 and 6 (based on home mailing address). If you live there, or know a colleague who does, please consider stepping up or making a recommendation.

Eligible DVM candidates must be accredited graduates, legal Alabama residents, and in active state practice for the last five consecutive years. Nominations are welcome from any licensed veterinarian, technician, layperson, or via self-nomination.

Deadline: August 3, 2026. Submit your CV and reference letters to [email protected].
