Still waiting for that promotion to the left seat? In your wanting of it have you felt like telling God you deserve it after all your years of safe flying, difficult scheduling, and moving slowly up the seniority list? Be careful.

When we are filled with bitterness from a perception that we have been treated unfairly and have not received what we deserve from God it becomes impossible to fully accept whatever it is that He might truly want to give us. The harboring of resentment against God is an effective block to His blessing of our lives in other ways.

"Rest in the Lord, and wait patiently for Him; do not fret because of him who prospers in his way." Psalm 37:7

While visiting Prairie College in Alberta, I was able to tour the new training center which will open this spring. Prairie College is Canada's only Christian College that hosts a full-service flight training program. It is great to see the program growing and God blessing Prairie.

Workaholism is a reality in the world today, including in the aviation world. Workaholism “with a cross hung around its neck” is a problem in the Church. Could have we forgotten that our Lord’s burden is light and His yoke easy?
The temptation to try too hard is a powerful one today. We are uncomfortable with rest. Our theology tells us that faith, not works, saves us but many believers pay only lip service to this foundational truth. “Sure”, we say “salvation is a gift”. Then we begin what is often a lifetime of attempting to earn our way. Salvation may be free, but sanctification apparently involves a lot of effort.

Self-empowered work without rest is workaholism and it was never the intention of our Lord. It is good for all of us to remember the occasion when Jesus told a busy Martha to stop criticizing her sister Mary who was resting quietly at His feet simply basking in His presence.

"Come to me, all who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you, and learn from me, for I am gentle and lowly in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For my yoke is easy, and my burden is light." -Matthew 11:28-30

Last week FCAP visited California Baptist University (CBU) and visited students throughout campus. We also taught a workshop on "God in Work" for students to learn about workplace ministry.

Throwback Thursday

“Throwback Thursdays” are a weekly journey into the past of our industry. If any of you have specific airlines/airplanes, you’d like to see featured, feel free to “drop us a line” and we will see if we can find them for you.

This Delta Airlines Boeing 727-232 (Advanced) “N455DA” was newly factory-delivered to the Atlanta-based carrier in 1973 when this image was captured at New York’s John F. Kennedy Airport. While Delta’s first 727’s came to the company through its merger with Northeast Airlines in August the previous year new aircraft were already on order. In the background we also see an Iberia Airlines of Spain Boeing 747-156 “EC-BRQ” on its gate on the West Wing of the International Arrivals Building (IAB). This particular aircraft is the very first 747 ever to be delivered to Iberia.

Ever have a fellow Christian cabin crew member realize you are struggling emotionally and then inform you the answer to all your problems is just to pray and read more Scripture? Not particularly helpful advice when you are grieving something you have truly lost is it?

It sometimes seems as if some contemporary Christians have completely forgotten that Heaven cannot be attained here. It can only be entered upon death. We sometimes do not want to come to grips with the fact that trials and tribulations are part and parcel of the present human condition. The New Testament teaches us to “bear each other’s burdens” and to “mourn with those who mourn.” It never tells us to inform a suffering child of God that he or she is somehow always at fault for feeling sorrow. Nowhere in Scripture are we told dismissively to “just pray more and get over it.”
