Fun Fact Friday- Tropical fruits in our own backyard!

Did you know that we have fruit trees in Georgia? Common pawpaws (Asimina triloba) are small-medium trees found throughout the southeastern US and up into the Great Lakes region. They have large, plain leaves, purplish flowers, and edible fruits! Their fruits have large seeds and a texture and taste similar to tropical fruits like bananas and mangoes. There are actually 13 different species of pawpaw, but only 2-3 are found north of the Gulf Coast!

Fun Fact Friday- Epiphytes

Our last Wild Wednesday was about mosses and resurrection ferns. Both of these plants are called epiphytes. These are a type of plant that grows on top of another plant and absorbs water and nutrients straight from the air! Although large plants like Spanish moss can eventually weigh down trees, epiphytes are generally harmless and do not impact their host plants at all.

Wild Wednesday- They are Risen!

Georgia has been seeing drought conditions all across the state with many areas going weeks with no rain. Many plants have been stunted or outright killed with little to no available water. Other amazing plants have the ability to survive even the most extreme droughts, even if they don't look like it!

Resurrection fern is a plant that grows on the branches of large trees like oaks, cypresses, and pecans. They use small roots to hold on to trees, but not to absorb water an nutrients like other plants. Most of their absorption is straight from the air or the surface of their host plant. When in a drought, resurrection ferns curl their leaves and appear completely dry and dead. In this state, they can lose up to 97% of their internal water! When there is rain or even increased humidity, the leaves will begin to uncurl and gain 50% of its water in just 1 hour. They can potentially survive in this dried state for up to 100 years! By comparison, most plants completely die when their water content drops by only 50%.

Mosses are another group of amazingly drought tolerant plants! They will also go dormant and wat for the next big rain to do photosynthesis and reproduce before eventually drying back out during the next drought spell. Mosses absorb water directly from the air and have no storage system, requiring them to be tolerant of the most extreme amounts of water.
