October is Health Literacy Month!

Health literacy empowers families to understand health information, make informed decisions, and advocate for themselves and their loved ones.

Black families and communities can help close health information gaps by asking questions at medical appointments, sharing trusted health resources, and encouraging loved ones to schedule preventive screenings and annual checkups.

Let’s turn knowledge into action and work together to build healthier Black families and stronger communities!

As we close out September and Childhood Cancer Awareness Month, we want to take a moment to celebrate our very own Quintin Jr. and an incredible milestone: seven years cancer-free!

Childhood Cancer Awareness Month reminds us of the children and families who have faced this diagnosis, those still fighting, and the importance of continuing to bring awareness to childhood cancer.

And while every childhood cancer journey is different, today we are grateful to celebrate Quintin’s story as one of victory. Seven years later, we have the blessing of watching him grow, thrive, and continue making memories.

Quintin Jr., your FCAC family celebrates you and this incredible milestone. 💙🩷💙

Today, we honor the life and legacy of Carole Robertson, a 14-year-old member of the Birmingham Chapter of Jack and Jill of America, Inc.

On September 15, 1963, a bomb exploded at Birmingham’s 16th Street Baptist Church, taking the lives of Carole and three other young African American girls: Addie Mae Collins, Cynthia Wesley and Denise McNair.

Carole was more than a name attached to a tragic moment in history. She was a daughter, a student, a musician and a fellow Jill. She was an honor student who loved to read, played the clarinet and had a future filled with possibility.

In 1964, Jack and Jill of America established Carole Robertson Day in her memory. Each September, chapters across the country honor her life while teaching our children about the importance of human rights, civil rights and racial harmony.

More than 60 years later, we continue to say Carole’s name, share her story and remember the lives of Addie Mae, Cynthia and Denise alongside hers.

And as Jack and Jill mothers, we continue nurturing the next generation of African American leaders, empowering our children to lead, serve and use their power to make a difference.

We remember. We honor. We carry her legacy forward.
