Rebuilding Together Long Island

Rebuilding Together Long Island Repairing homes. Revitalizing communities. Rebuilding lives. With the ever rising cost of living on Long Island, our work becomes more and more critical.

Our volunteers are dedicated to helping our neighbors with free critical home repairs and where needed, modifications to ensure safety and independence. Our organization address conditions that present a safety risk or limit a person's access to or within their home. All services are provided at no cost to eligible homeowners. Our program helps to relieve low-income homeowners who are elderly, vet

erans, disabled or families with children, of the hardships caused by living in a home that is in desperate need of repair. Our volunteers give of themselves and often become advocates on behalf of the homeowners. Often, we are the last hope for help. We do our best, one home at a time.

A ramp. A bathroom. A means of getting to the doctor without fear.

Sometimes the changes that mean the most are the ones many take for granted.

In this video, Jeanette on behalf of her family and Martha share how accessibility home repairs helped to restore safety, independence, and freedom in their daily lives.

From wheelchair ramps to safer home modifications, these projects aid in neighbors staying connected to their community and remain safely in the homes they love so dearly.

Because we believe that everyone deserves a home that works for them.

Thank you to NBCUniversal Local's Creative Impact Lab, George to the Rescue, and Reel Works for affording us a great opportunity to tell these powerful stories and spotlight the impact of neighbors helping neighbors.

The Suffolk crew was out in East Patchogue recently and Day 1 of helping a neighbor kept them pretty busy. House numbers were attached. They built two railings for front door entrance, patched the outside wall with pvc at the entrance. In the kitchen, they replaced hot and cold shut off valves, replaced hot and cold piping from faucet to basement mains. Next they patched sheetrock in the ceiling. A fire extinguisher was mounted. Moving to the living room, they replaced the outlet for a/c and added an a/c extension cord. Replaced outlet for TV and wifi, added a 6 pack surge protector. 5 smoke alarms and a CO2 were installed. In the bathroom - cut out old bathtub drain, installed new popup, drain body and over- follow mount. Moving to the basement, the crew repaired two light fixtures, replaced a switch and lots of other miscellaneous items. There will be a Day 2 for this home.
Gotta get 'er done and keep 'em safe. 🙂

“Within one day this amazing safe accessible ramp for my mother was built.”

When mobility challenges make it difficult to leave home, something as simple as a ramp can change daily life.

In this video, a homeowner’s daughter shares how volunteers came together to build an accessible ramp that made outings, appointments, and everyday routines possible again.

“Now we can go to the doctor without a problem… It’s not a barrier anymore.”

That’s what community support can do - remove barriers and help neighbors remain safe, independent, and connected.

Thank you to NBCUniversal Local’s Creative Impact Lab, George to the Rescue and Reel Works for helping share the impact of this work.

This year, you can help make projects like this possible. Donate or volunteer to help a neighbor in need.

Such a lovely thank you from a loving son. We know how important ramps are. They keep those with limited mobility safer and provide a link to the community. Many times our social media followers get to see the ramp and the crew that built it, but there are so many more people involved with each ramp. It starts with our telephone intake people, then the financial committee reviews the documents, when approved - the home visitor goes to the home and does a top to bottom inspection to see what else may be needed and submits a report. Next the crew captain visits, takes measurements, creates a materials list and another team member does the drawing to lay out the plan. Soon the lumber and hardware are ordered and the material is delivered. Next a crew is assembled and the work begins. When done a report must be sent in for entry into our system. If the funding was provided by a grant (that may have taken hours to write) that too needs to be recorded and expenses tracked to the grant. So many people involved for each and every ramp as well as the other projects that we complete. Did I mention that each and everyone of these wonderful, giving people are VOLUNTEERS đź’š We could not accomplish all that have and all that we do without a strong, dedicated volunteer team. GO TEAM!

“I had to pay for everything that had to be done and financially I was not able to do all of that.”

For many older adults and neighbors living with mobility challenges, necessary home modifications can feel out of reach but they can also be life changing.

In this video, one homeowner shares how accessible improvements including a tub cut, an exterior ramp, and garage upgrades made everyday life safer and easier after knee surgeries.

At Rebuilding Together Long Island, we believe everyone deserves a safe and accessible home. That’s why volunteers, donors, and partners come together to help neighbors remain independent where they belong - at home.

Thank you to NBCUniversal Local’s Creative Impact Lab, George to the Rescue and Reel Works for helping us share these stories and the impact of this work.
