Lend A Hand Up Lend A Hand Up is a nonprofit that raises help and hope for families in crisis. Lend A Hand Up is a 501(c)3 subsidiary of Dakota Medical Foundation.

Gifts raised through Lend A Hand Up are boosted to inspire and maximize the impact of generosity for families in crisis due to health issues, loss of life or other traumatic events.

Kari Hanson was involved in a severe auto accident that resulted in multiple traumatic injuries. She broke the heel of her foot which required surgery, broke her arm, sustained a deep laceration across her forehead along with a concussion, and a punctured lung. She has spent time in the hospital and is now in rehabilitation, working to regain mobility and strength.

Scott Salberg was an EMT with Buffalo QRU and co-president of Page Ambulance. He was diagnosed with bladder cancer and began treatment last spring, enduring two difficult procedures and recovery. Through all the doctor visits and treatments, he continued to work. About a month ago an ER visit revealed esophageal cancer with complications. Scott is now under the care of hospice.

His wife, Nikki, and their children, Piper and Maks, have faced each turn of uncertainty alongside him. Now, Trevor will soon need to hang up the drumsticks.

Alyiah Braaten has pericarditis and ascites. She had a virus that attacked her heart, which caused severe inflammation around the heart. Over time, the sac surrounding her heart has become calcified, making it difficult for her heart to properly expand, relax, and function. The pressure from her heart problems have now led to other health issues.

Jake Kienzle was diagnosed with Stage III re**al cancer in July 2026 at age 36. His current treatment plan with the Roger Maris Cancer Center in Fargo includes six weeks of radiation and chemotherapy followed by four additional months of chemotherapy. Jake has been married to his wife Brita for 10 years. Together, they have a young daughter, Lena, who is set to begin kindergarten this fall.
