A synod is a group of people on the way together. The word "synod" comes from the Greek words: syn meaning together, and hodos meaning the way. We are made up of over 180 congregations, 2 campus ministries, 2 outdoor ministry sites, a number of specialized ministry teams, baptized members, and rostered ministers spread out across the eastern third of the state. The synod covers approximately the

eastern third of the state of North Dakota and is divided into eight conferences:
1. Prairie Rose
2. Spirit Lake
3. Grafton
5. Grand Forks
6. Jamestown
7. Mayville
8. Wahpeton

On August 29, 2026, rostered and lay leaders from across the church, diverse guests of several denominations, and ELCA Presiding Bishop Yehiel Curry gathered at St. John Lutheran in Dickinson, ND, to celebrate the installation of Western North Dakota Synod Bishop Lisa Lewton.

We join our siblings in Christ in offering our deep gratitude, prayers, and joy as Bishop Lewton steps into this new chapter of leadership. May God bless her ministry and the entire synod as we walk together in faith, hope, and service!

Celebrating New Achievements 🎉

The Eastern North Dakota Synod staff could not be prouder of our Communications Coordinator, Alexandra Benson-Tuff ("Deacon Alex" to us!). After years of hard work, dedication, and study, Alex has earned her Master’s degree as a Licensed Associate Professional Counselor.

Throughout her time with us, Alex has faithfully managed our website, social media channels, and Connections email newsletter, keeping our community connected and informed with care and creativity.

As her next stop takes her to Solace Counseling in Fargo to begin her practice, we feel deeply grateful to have been a part of her journey. We know her gifts will be an incredible blessing to her future clients.
