Hall of Fame Spotlight: Vernon Hektner (Class of 1939)

We are honored to induct Vernon Hektner into the 2026 Wahpeton Public School Hall of Fame.

Vernon graduated from Wahpeton High School in 1939. He was part of the first class of students from Mooreton to be bused to Wahpeton Central School, beginning a lifelong connection to education and the Wahpeton community. He attended NDSCS from 1939–1941 before graduating from Concordia College in 1943. In 1945, he earned a master’s degree in history from the University of Colorado at Boulder.

Vernon dedicated his career to education, spending nearly four decades at what is now NDSCS. He began teaching history in 1946 and then served as Dean of the Arts and Science Division from 1956–1982 before returning to the classroom from 1982–1984. Beyond education, Vernon served 10 years on the Wahpeton School Board, during which time the current high school was built. He was also deeply involved in Kiwanis and numerous community organizations and boards. His contributions to education and the community were recognized through numerous honors, including the Kiwanis Tablet of Honor and the naming of the Hektner Student Center at NDSCS in his honor in 2016.

Join us in celebrating Vernon’s lifelong commitment to education, leadership, and community service at this year’s Hall of Fame Induction Ceremony and Luncheon, hosted by the Wahpeton Alumni Foundation.

Congratulations Travis on your new mission.

We are excited to welcome Mr. Travis Andersen as the new full-time Synodically Authorized Minister (SAM) of Disciple Lutheran Parish!

Travis comes to us from Minot and has served our parish as pulpit supply in Palermo over the past year. Our current worship schedule will remain the same, with our current SAMs transitioning into mentorship roles while continuing to assist on fourth Sundays.

Please join us in welcoming Travis to Disciple Lutheran Parish. We are incredibly excited for this new chapter in our ministry together!

Consider adopting a campsite at Heart Butte Scout Reservation (HBSR) for your troop, pack, crew or ship. Adopting a campsite is a great way to help maintain and improve a special place for scouts. Your work gives your unit a campsite to return to year after year while building pride, creating memories, and making a lasting impact. Units that commit to a campsite at HBSR can enjoy their site once a month while helping care for it by trimming branches, removing downed trees, cleaning fire pits, and keeping the campsite safe and welcoming. Make HBSR your troop or pack's new home away from home.
