Hall of Fame Spotlight: Vernon Hektner (Class of 1939)
We are honored to induct Vernon Hektner into the 2026 Wahpeton Public School Hall of Fame.
Vernon graduated from Wahpeton High School in 1939. He was part of the first class of students from Mooreton to be bused to Wahpeton Central School, beginning a lifelong connection to education and the Wahpeton community. He attended NDSCS from 1939–1941 before graduating from Concordia College in 1943. In 1945, he earned a master’s degree in history from the University of Colorado at Boulder.
Vernon dedicated his career to education, spending nearly four decades at what is now NDSCS. He began teaching history in 1946 and then served as Dean of the Arts and Science Division from 1956–1982 before returning to the classroom from 1982–1984. Beyond education, Vernon served 10 years on the Wahpeton School Board, during which time the current high school was built. He was also deeply involved in Kiwanis and numerous community organizations and boards. His contributions to education and the community were recognized through numerous honors, including the Kiwanis Tablet of Honor and the naming of the Hektner Student Center at NDSCS in his honor in 2016.
Join us in celebrating Vernon’s lifelong commitment to education, leadership, and community service at this year’s Hall of Fame Induction Ceremony and Luncheon, hosted by the Wahpeton Alumni Foundation.
