50th Anniversary Ceremony Marking the Arrival of Kurds to America Held in Nashville
Branch 7 of the Kurdistan Democratic Party (KDP) in the United States and Canada hosted a symposium celebrating the 50th anniversary of the arrival of Kurds to the U.S. and Canada. This initial migration occurred following a decision by the leadership of the September Revolution, which dispatched cadre members and scholars abroad to voice the Kurdish people's demands to international governments and the public.
The event opened with the Kurdish national anthem, "Ey Reqîb," followed by a moment of silence to honor the martyrs of Kurdistan. Epak Ismail then welcomed the attendees and delivered opening remarks on behalf of the party.
Afterward, Mr. Hikmat Bamarni, head of Branch 7 of the KDP in the U.S. and Canada, read a special message from H.E. President Masoud Barzani written for the occasion.
In his message, President Barzani emphasized Kurdish unity, strengthening relations and cooperation with other diaspora communities, respecting U.S. laws and regulations, preserving and developing the Kurdish language and culture, and advocating for the rights of the Kurdish nation under a unified vision.
The ceremony featured a panel discussion with experts on Kurdish affairs:
Professor Edmond Ghareeb: Discussed the role of Kurds in raising awareness about the Kurdish cause among American institutions and the public, highlighting the legacy of the late Mustafa Barzani.
Mr. Ahmed Ferhadi: Translator and lecturer at New York University, covered the early history of Kurdish immigrants who arrived in the U.S. prior to the primary migration wave.
Professor Ghazi Zibari: Shared his personal journey of moving to the U.S., serving as an inspiring example of overcoming hardships to achieve academic success, and encouraged youth to pursue higher education while supporting their nation.
Hikmat Bamarni: Head of Branch 7, highlighted the diaspora's advocacy work, including organizing rallies and writing letters to presidents, senators, congressmembers, and officials to build support for Kurdistan and condemn regimes responsible for genocide against the Kurdish people.
Ms. Rojya Awarah Tayib: Shared her experience of moving to the U.S. at just 8 months old, expressing pride in maintaining her Kurdish language and cultural identity while achieving success in her academic and professional life.
