Fancy Cats & Dogs is a nonprofit organization run by volunteers, with the purpose of rehoming cats that need it. A lot of these cats have been through hard times, so we do our best to make sure to match up every cat with the right human(s) for them. We are a 501(c)(3) charity and our money comes from donations so anything that you can do to help is immensely appreciated (United Way #98772)

The Fancy Cats & Dogs Rescue Team is a passionate leader in the animal rescue community with over 20 years experience. Founded in 1997 by Cathy Awad, Fancy Cats now has four PetSmart Adoption Centers and 150+ volunteers. Our mission is to end needless euthanasia at shelters in the National Capital area by rescuing and finding suitable lifetime homes for our cats & dogs, promoting spaying and neutering, and educating the public on responsible pet ownership. Since our inception in 1997, we have found loving homes for 15,000+ cats. Maxwell is a lovable, gentle, silly boy who found himself needing rescue through absolutely no fault of his own. His previous family could no longer keep him, and while his heart is still healing from that loss, his sweet, playful personality is shining through more every day.

He’s house‑trained, crate‑trained, calm when free‑roaming, and wonderfully friendly with other dogs. His former family described him as goofy, affectionate, and endlessly playful — the kind of dog who brought joy into their home daily. That dog is still right there, just waiting for a safe, quiet place where he can fully relax again 😄

Maxwell thrives in peaceful environments and does best with calmer canine companions. He has a positive history with children, though a child‑free home is recommended since he can be a little nervous with new people. Once he trusts you, he’ll reward you with loyalty, gentleness, and a whole lot of goofy love.

He didn’t choose his situation, and he didn’t do anything wrong — he’s simply a big‑hearted boy who lost his family and has been waiting 10 long months for someone to finally see him.

❤️ Sierra needs a new foster home—and she needs our help! ❤️

Beautiful Sierra is approximately 3 years old and weighs 49 pounds. This happy, energetic girl arrived at the shelter as a stray, and sadly, no one ever came looking for her. Now, through no fault of her own, she needs another change in her life.

Sierra is currently in a foster home, but she and the resident dog aren't getting along, and she needs to move to a new foster home as soon as possible. Although she tested well with other dogs at the shelter, things haven't worked out in her current home. It may simply be a personality conflict. We just don't know. Sometimes, dogs who do well together in one setting don't thrive together in a home environment.

What we do know is that Sierra is a beautiful girl who deserves a chance! She's happy, enthusiastic, people-pleasing, and eager to learn. She enjoys attention, responds to guidance, and has so much potential to become a wonderful companion with patience, consistency, exercise, and positive training.

🙏 Can you open your home to Sierra? We need a foster who can give her a safe, loving place to land while we figure out the best path forward for her. For now, a home without other dogs would help us avoid another difficult situation and allow Sierra to settle in and shine as an individual.

Luna is a sweet, smart, four‑year‑old Terrier who was rescued just in time from a high‑kill shelter. She’s living proof that every dog deserves a second chance — because she is nothing short of amazing.

This beautiful young mom came to us as a community cat with three adorable orange kittens, and she’s been nothing short of amazing. Now that her babies are growing up, Yammie is finally ready to enjoy a loving home of her own.

She’s incredibly affectionate, loves pets, and even enjoys being picked up — a pretty special trait for a former outdoor girl. Yammie is still adjusting to indoor life, so she’ll need a little patience as she learns that being a pampered house cat is actually pretty wonderful 😸

Meet Tot!

If Tater is the tiny one, Tot is her slightly bigger - but equally adorable sister! These two are the perfect little pair and are always finding ways to keep each other entertained.

Tot is a playful, curious 7 week old kitten who especially loves wrestling and pouncing with her sister. Whether they’re chasing each other around, tackling each other in a kitten wrestling match, or curling up together afterward, these two are never short on fun.

Like her siblings, Tot has been raised with lots of love and plenty of socialization. She’s had lots of time with our kids and even the neighbor kids, helping her become a happy, confident, well-adjusted kitten who is comfortable around people.

Tot is sweet, silly, energetic, and absolutely adorable. She’s ready to bring her playful personality—and a whole lot of kitten chaos—to her forever home.

And yes, she comes with a built-in wrestling partner if you happen to have room for two!
