Fannie Mae volunteers partnered with Coalition for the Homeless – Washington, D.C. to support improvement projects at the Emery Men’s Shelter in Northeast DC! 💙

Throughout the day, volunteers painted interior spaces, restored community garden beds, planted flower boxes, and helped beautify outdoor areas to create a cleaner, brighter, and more welcoming environment for shelter residents and staff.

These projects may seem simple, but they make a meaningful impact by helping create spaces that feel safe, comfortable, and dignified for individuals experiencing homelessness.

A huge thank you to the Fannie Mae team for dedicating their time and energy to serve the community, and to the Coalition for the Homeless for the incredible work they do every day to support neighbors in need.

Expel volunteers recently teamed up with GrandInvolve at their Herndon office to assemble literacy kits for Title I schools across Fairfax County.

These hands-on kits were created to make reading and word-building more fun, engaging, and accessible for students. By putting these learning tools together, volunteers helped support equitable access to education, boost student confidence, and encourage long-term academic success.

Thank you, Expel volunteers, for showing up for Fairfax County students!

Today, CMAI Technology volunteers packed welcome-home baskets for 36 families with Pathway Homes, Inc. in Fairfax. These baskets will support individuals as they move into stable housing, providing essential household items to help them feel comfortable and at home as they begin a new chapter.

By coming together for this hands-on project, volunteers are helping build dignity, stability, and a strong foundation for recovery and independence for adults overcoming mental health challenges.

This International Guide Dog Day, we’re proud to celebrate our partner organization, Guiding Eyes for the Blind, a nonprofit dedicated to providing expertly trained guide dogs to people with vision loss. Since 1954, Guiding Eyes has graduated more than 10,000 guide dog teams, transforming lives through greater independence and mobility.

We also want to spotlight a very special future guide dog: Keene. Keene is a yellow Labrador currently being raised by Volunteer Fairfax team member Patricia Medeiros, with support from a wonderful network of volunteer puppy sitters, including VF staff member Tammy Deem.

Keene is smart, attentive, and already a favorite around the office, where he often stops by to brighten our day. We’re excited to follow his journey and are hopeful he will go on to become an exceptional guide dog for someone. 💙

“A full life is a life about helping others.”

During National Volunteer Week, we’re proud to spotlight the Retired and Senior Volunteer Program volunteer Gordon Hay. Through his service with Northern Virginia Family Services (NVFS), Capital Caring Health, the Red Cross, and True Ground, Gordon brings compassion and care to every role he takes on.

For several years, he has supported NVFS’ Moxley and Fairview offices, answering calls, listening closely to community needs, and connecting individuals to vital services. He’s also provided translation support (French to English) for asylum seekers from Africa, helping ensure they feel heard and understood. In hospice care, Gordon assists staff behind the scenes, and with the Red Cross, he supports blood donor services.

Thank you, Gordon, for helping our mission take root and grow.
