Because sometimes the fastest fire apparatus has pedals. 🚲🔥

If you’ve seen us on bikes in the middle of a crowd, there’s a reason. Fairfax County and its volunteers provide an important service at large events, putting first responders right in the middle of the action, where traditional apparatus may not be able to quickly reach.

You may also spot our volunteer bike teams along local trails during busy walks, runs, and community events, helping make sure first responders can get where they’re needed, even when four wheels can’t. 🚲🚨

Two wheels. Tight spaces. Right where we’re needed.

As we mark 25 years since September 11, Fairfax County Volunteer Fire & Rescue Association (FCVFRA) members are reflecting on the legacy of that day, what we remember, what has changed, and how we carry forward the service and sacrifice of those we lost.

The reflections here come directly from FCVFRA volunteers who served on 9/11 and the days that followed. Their words speak to duty, courage, and the enduring spirit of community members coming together to make a difference.

Today, the Fairfax County Volunteer Fire & Rescue Association (FCVFRA) remembers the nearly 3,000 lives lost on September 11, 2001, and honors the first responders and everyday Americans alike who answered the call to serve – many making the ultimate sacrifice.

We also remember what followed: volunteers and community members stepping forward to help their neighbors and stand together in a time of extraordinary need.

That spirit of service remains especially meaningful in today's fire service. Twenty-five years later, we honor all those we lost and all those who served.

Throughout the day, we will share reflections from FCVFRA members on what September 11 and the days that followed meant to them, and how that spirit of service continues today.

We will never forget.
