We’re excited to introduce Christopher Martinez, our Media Intern!

Christopher is currently finishing his Bachelor’s degree in Graphic Design at Northeastern Illinois University, where he is a senior and expects to graduate in Fall 2026. Originally from Chicago, Christopher began his college studies in Computer Engineering before discovering his passion for graphic design in 2021.

Chris initially became interested in graphic design through his love of video creation and editing, but once he entered the program, he discovered countless new ways to create and communicate through design. His goal is to use graphic design to create, connect, and bring communities together.

Outside of the classroom, Chris currently works at an art gallery, where he helps install and de-install exhibitions and assists with artist talks and community events. He has also worked in hockey retail and volunteered at festivals throughout the Chicago area. At Northeastern Illinois University, he is involved with the Northeastern Art and Design Association, which hosts workshops and lectures featuring alumni and professional artists and designers.

His interests include typography, sports, video games, and exercising. One of his favorite projects has been his capstone project highlighting the Adler Planetarium. Christopher created banners displayed around the city, posters, a brochure, stickers, and pins to help bring awareness to the planetarium and engage the community.

During his time with Meals on Wheels NEI, Christopher hopes to gain real-world experience outside of the classroom, collaborate with others, and continue developing his ability to work creatively with a team to solve problems and bring ideas to life.

We’re so excited to have Chris on the team and can’t wait to see the creativity and perspective he brings to Meals on Wheels NEI!

Happy National Senior Citizens Day!

Today, we’re celebrating the older adults who make our communities stronger, vibrant, and more connected.

At Meals on Wheels Northeastern Illinois, we believe aging should be about living well, staying connected, and maintaining independence — and that support should extend far beyond a meal.

Through our programs, we provide nutritious meals, wellness checks, community engagement, access to resources and services, and even pet food assistance to help our clients and their beloved pets thrive at home.

Every delivery is an opportunity to say hello, check in, share a conversation, and remind someone that their community cares about them.

Want to help a senior in your community age with dignity and independence? There are many ways to get involved, from volunteering as a delivery driver to supporting the programs that help our neighbors remain safely and independently at home.

Meet Hallah Alabed

Loyola University Chicago | Advertising & Public Relations | Class of 2027

Originally from Nashville, Tennessee, Hallah is a Communications student at Loyola University Chicago with a passion for storytelling, writing, and nonprofit work.
Her interest in communications began early, inspired by her mom’s career in Marketing and Communications. Through watching her mom’s storytelling process, along with volunteering during summers at Gilda’s Club Middle Tennessee, Hallah discovered her own love for writing and the impact that thoughtful communication can have.
At Gilda’s Club, Hallah worked on projects focused on organization and supporting staff, while also gaining experience in blog writing and event planning. These experiences introduced her to the nonprofit world and helped her realize how much she enjoys work centered around community and helping others.

As an intern with Meals on Wheels Northeastern Illinois, Hallah is looking forward to becoming comfortable with the team and our mission while putting her creativity and communication skills to work. She is especially excited to brainstorm social media ideas, develop creative content, and bring those ideas to life alongside her fellow interns.
When she’s not studying or writing, you can find Hallah exploring Chicago, trying out new coffee shops, dancing, or walking along the lake.
We’re excited to have Hallah on our team and can’t wait to see the creativity and ideas she brings to Meals on Wheels Northeastern Illinois!

Happy !

We wouldn’t be anywhere without our incredible volunteers. They truly are the heart of Meals on Wheels Northeastern Illinois, and today we’re giving a special shoutout to Jason, Phil, and Kit for stepping in to help with AM Food Prep!

Their extra hands help make sure our clients receive nutritious, high-quality meals made with care. We’re so grateful for volunteers who jump in wherever they’re needed and help keep our kitchen running smoothly!

Did you know that we produce over 600 meals every day right here in our kitchen for our clients? We’re also proud to be one of the few Meals on Wheels programs with our own kitchen, allowing us to prepare fresh meals with our clients’ needs in mind.

Thank you, Jason, Phil, and Kit — and thank you to ALL of our volunteers for everything you do! We couldn’t do this without you.

Want to get involved? We’d love to have you join our volunteer team! Head to mealsonwheelsnei.org fill out our volunteer application and learn more about how you can make a difference in our community!

!Team Highlight!

Without our wonderful staff, Meals on Wheels Northeastern Illinois couldn’t run the way it does. Today we want to recognize Ann, who works our front desk and handles all of our emails and follow ups. Ann took some time in her day to tell me about her time at Meals on Wheels.

Ann has been working with Meals on Wheels for 4 years, starting with deliveries and then slowly transitioned to a role at the front desk. She now works with clients over the phone and listens to their feedback, concerns, and follow- ups, while also handling behind the scene cases. She loves to work with people whether it's over the phone or in person. Ann is the first person you will talk to when you call, and the first person you’ll meet when you come into Meals on Wheels.Thank you Ann for all you do and for being such a beam of light for everyone! We appreciate you!

Meet our Intern: Justinian Azhar Ali Rahmat
Loyola University Chicago
Marketing Major, Senior

I am studying business marketing, as I have always been interested in connecting others to new original ideas!

I am personally passionate about all things film and creative cinema, and create my own video projects in my free time! I also play the piano and train in Muay Thai when I am not busy. All the while, I love my two albino mice who are brothers, Mr. Stinky and Scooter, as well as my small hamster buddy named Snowball, very dearly.

Briefly at the start of my college career, I began a premium up-cycled clothing store located in the heart of midtown Houston! It helped me gain more experience collaborating with other small businesses, maintaining and managing my own small business in a more authentic and fast paced atmosphere. This store was also created from a rented storage container, customized with a local artist’s graffiti and was a mini quasi icon in midtown!

I hope to gain a better understanding of how stories and community connection can go hand in hand with marketing as a conduit to spread awareness. I also am seeking to hone my skills in communication through hopefully absorbing any lessons I learn from the wonderful team at MOWNEI! I am excited to be of help and to learn as I go along.

Meals on Wheels mission is to bring community and support to our clients whenever needed. This week we brought that vision to life by visiting the Senior center to help with setting up for lunch. In life food can be a bridge. It can create memories, new experiences, and relationships. We were given the opportunity to sit and talk with a group at the senior center over lunch and get to know them a little bit more and hear what they think of the food.

“We love to be here together. All the food is really great! Our favorites are beef roast, 3 cheese lasagna, and stuffed mushrooms.”

Our community is what gives us pride in giving and serving meals and hearing their stories and their voices. Thank you to them for brightening our staff's day!

We sat down with Lori Nerenberg, a volunteer for Meals on Wheels Northeastern Illinois to ask her about her role with our non-profit. Her primary job has been a "packer" for 4 years, which is the middleman between the kitchen who prepares the meals and the drivers who deliver them to our clients. She started by volunteering at the front desk before learning about her love for the hands-on aspects of our operations. She says "There are a lot of different things you can do here to contribute, and it just makes you feel good. Everybody here makes you feel welcome and that your role is important." She enjoys teaming up with Northwestern University students to teach them about the packing process. Thank you, Lori for all that you do!
