CASA of Humboldt

CASA of Humboldt CASA speaks for children in court because all children have a right to live in a safe, healthy and secure environment.

A CASA advocate is the eyes and ears of the judge in the world and the voice for the child in the courtroom. If you are someone who cares, you could become a consistent support for a child in their time of crisis. Advocates work for the best interest of children who enter the court system primarily as a result of abuse and neglect. Advocates interview parents, teachers, social workers, and anyone

else who might have insight into the needs, challenges and strengths of the child. Volunteers form a team with their case supervisor and supplement the role of other professionals involved in the case.Advocates have the unique ability to focus on the needs of one child at a time. Advocates visit with their CASA child on a regular basis and develop a relationship with the child. As officers of the court, volunteers provide the judge with written reports that directly impact the decisions made regarding the child's life. Most of all, they are a friend to the child. Advocates come from all walks of life, with a variety of professional, educational and ethnic backgrounds. Volunteers are selected on the basis of their objectivity, competence and commitment. No special experience is required; CASA provides all of the necessary training. Many volunteers find their time as an advocate helps them gain experience, which serves them in other aspects of their lives.

Juneteenth is Freedom Day, marking the exact day in 1865 when federal troops arrived in Galveston, Texas, to ensure all enslaved people were freed.

At CASA of Humboldt, we pause on this day to reflect on our country’s history of anti-Blackness and the disenfranchisement of Black, brown, and Indigenous communities.

We invite you to join us in transforming the foster care and juvenile justice systems that serve a disproportionate number of BIPOC youth.

Thank you to Speaker Robert Rivas, Pro Tem Senator Monique Limón, Budget Chairs Senator John Laird and Assemblymember Jesse Gabriel , and our budget champions, Assemblymember Mia Bonta and Senator Tom Umberg, for seeing the impact that CASA volunteers make. Because of you, we are one step closer to ensuring that every child in foster care and juvenile justice across California has the transformative support of a CASA volunteer.

The revised state budget now includes $20 million for CASA programs, but we haven't crossed the finish line yet. The budget now goes to Governor Gavin Newsom for his consideration. You can reach out to Governor Newsom today and urge him to keep CASA funding in our state budget at www.gov.ca.gov/contact (use the "Legislation Issues/Concerns" topic area) or 916-445-2841.

During Immigrant Heritage Month, we remain committed to equity, inclusion, and culturally responsive advocacy so every child can thrive.

Our CASA volunteers are trained to center each child’s lived experience, including their culture and language. They are trained on how to respond to immigration-related issues, and advocate for bills that support our immigrant families in accessing the services and supports they need.

CASA of Humboldt is beyond honored to share some exciting news!

We have been selected as the June recipient of a donation from the Eureka Woman's CLUB — and this year is extra special, as they are celebrating their incredible 125th anniversary.

Their generous gift will go directly toward our Youth Activity Fund, ensuring that every young person who comes to visit the CASA House has access to snacks and feels truly welcome the moment they walk in the door. For children navigating the foster care system, those small moments of warmth and belonging matter more than we can say.

Thank you, Eureka Woman's Club. We are so grateful, and so proud to be part of this community alongside you!
