The National Weather Service has issued a Heat Advisory for Vermont today into the weekend with temperatures expected to reach the mid-90s. REMEMBER: Children's bodies warm up faster than adults and have less sweating capacity than adults, putting them at a higher risk for heat illness, so drink lots of fluids, take extra breaks, and seek shade and cool indoor locations. For other tips to help you prepare for the heat, please visit the Vermont Department of Health's Hot Weather resource page: healthvermont.gov/environment/climate-health/hot-weather

Our friends at the Afterschool Alliance released their America After 3 PM Summer report and it's a bit of a Bad News, Good-But-Actually-Bad News, Bad News, Good News, Really Good News kind of day.

THE BAD NEWS: Nationwide, for every child in a summer program, there's another child who doesn't have access to one. THE GOOD-BUT-ACTUALLY-BAD NEWS: in Vermont, the numbers are better with only 1 in 4 children missing out on a summer program. THE BAD NEWS: that means, 8,262 Vermont children don't have access to a summer program. THE GOOD NEWS: 95% of parents who have a child in a Vermont summer program rate it highly. THE REALLY GOOD NEWS: 9 out of 10 Vermonters (across party lines) support public funding for afterschool.

It should not be this difficult for families to access summer programs that will help their children engage, be active, and learn over the summer. Vermont Afterschool will continue to work with local and state lawmakers and all our community partners to tackle this problem until that 8,262 number turns to 0.
