Once upon time (2022), the Friends of the Chemung River Watershed, Inc. and Community Arts of Elmira partnered on an interactive public art canoe Led by Artist Chris Eldred at the Elmira Downtown Development, Inc Street Painting Festival, and that "Chemung River" canoe, an eighteen foot scene of fish, riverscape and hillside, has been displayed for years in the Community Arts of Elmira Window Gallery in the former Iszard's building owned by Capriotti Properties. This week the public art canoe has found its final home at the Elmira College Sustainability House for installation as a raised-bed garden in the EC Teaching Garden at the corner of One Park Place and Sixth Street in the Spring of 2027! The Teaching Garden is a hands-on experience for EC Students to cultivate crops, such as onions, beans, lettuce, tomatoes, herbs, and peppers, shared with the community, and supported by eco-friendly features, such as rain barrels at the Sustainability House. We thank Dr. Doc M. Billingsley, Elmira College Associate Professor of Anthropology and the Teaching Garden, Elmira College Department of Buildings and Grounds, and Elmira College for the their collaboration, as well as Artist Chris Eldred, Elmira Downtown Development, Inc, Friends of the Chemung River Watershed, Inc. and Capriotti Properties! Stay tuned for what's next in the CAE Window Gallery!
