We're so grateful that we have an amazing relationship with another nonprofit right here in Elmira, . Saturday was their annual Haunted Happenings event and we were invited back. This year we brought Greta and she was absolutely fabulous. She ate her personal limit of carrots (never thought she'd stop but apparently the limit does exist 🤣) and met tons of lovely folks. It was a gorgeous day and so much fun. Thanks for being our first unflappable horse Granny!

Historic day today! The NYC Council voted to eliminate carriage medallions in Central Park, New York City permanently. No more horses forced to work 11 months a year in the most urban city! It's a celebration today! But the wind down doesn't happen completely until June 2028 and they're threatening to try and sue to stop it. Miles to go before they're free but we're ready. Their spots are saved. The plans are set. All we need is one phone call or one email from any owner who truly wants the best life for that carriage horse and we'll be there. It's past time. Let's go!

Speaking of having choices . . . 🤣 It's fully Fall now and getting rather chilly overnight but warm and gorgeous during the day. We never want anyone overheating, so we pull sheets during the day. Well, for some of them. Clearly no longer Nighty. That was the grumpiest face he has EVER made. Sorry buddy. Not gonna make that mistake again. Geez ❤️🐎🌃🤣❤️

Thursday is finally vote day! Speaker Menin has confirmed that they expect at least 30 council members to vote in favor of putting a permanent ban in place for carriage horses to work in New York City. Lots of opinions on this topic and it's a very divisive topic. Before you go there, know that we are members of a HUGE coalition of equine sanctuaries who have agreed to accept every, single, one of these horses into permanent sanctuary life. That being said, no one is being forced to give up their horses. The owners, drivers and other humans connected to the industry may keep their horses and their real estate. That means we may get some of them here at HPF or none at all and that's alright. We have spots reserved for any who need us and we're making sure that Big Red is ready to roll as soon as the call comes in. We truly want the very best for every one of these horses and pray they all get to live horsily-ever-after. ❤️🐎❤️

Well, safe to say that duck release day didn't exactly go to plan. 🤣 We actually tried to release them yesterday. They never left the bread box. So today we encouraged them outside. And they went. Um, sort of. Basically, they went around the side and into the workshop instead of ya know, OUTSIDE. 🤣🤣🤣 Yup, this was the perfect crew for HPF. Thanks Uncie Terry! ❤️🦆😜❤️

This perfectly imperfect old man is just the best. Gus had never had any freedom or choices in his life before coming to us. He very obviously was the victim of endless abuse, to the point that all of his free will was beaten out of him completely. He has spent most of his life completely shut down emotionally. All we ever want for him is for him to be happy. In any way he can be. So here he gets to make his own decisions. We certainly don't let him raid the feed room, but if he wants to wander, he gets to wander. If he wants to play kissy face with Greta while SweetPea waits, so be it. He is beyond submissive, so allowing him to make his own choices helps to build self esteem and allows him to feel again. He got to be in his paddock for the open house. That would have been WAY too much for him to handle so he got to be outside and make choices about whether to visit with people or not. Giving freedom of choice to beings who have never had it is empowering. We can just imagine what the carriage horses are going to do when they get here and experience choices too! ❤️🐎🧓❤️
