An Evening of Poetry, Culture & Tradition

With great pleasure, we look forward to welcoming you on Sunday, October 18, as we come together to celebrate the rich literary heritage, culture, and traditions of our beloved subcontinent at the Diyanet Center, 9610 Good Luck Road, Lanham, MD 20706.

For the past 50 years, the Aligarh Alumni Association, Washington, DC, has had the privilege of bringing together lovers of Urdu poetry, literature, and culture. This remarkable journey would not have been possible without the warmth, generosity, and steadfast support of our cherished patrons and friends. We are deeply grateful for your continued support and affection.

Join us once again for an evening where words become poetry, poetry becomes emotion, and cherished traditions bring us together. Let us celebrate this beautiful journey together and keep the spirit of our shared cultural heritage alive for generations to come.

We look forward to seeing you at the Mushaira! Warmly,

Mushaira Organizing Committee

We are delighted to share the YouTube link to “The Aligarh Return,” a fully AI-generated movie created by Suhail Ahmad, an AMU alumnus and resident of Albany, New York.

The movie was screened last week at the Silver Jubilee Convention of the Federation of Aligarh Alumni Associations (FAAA) in Albany and was very well received. It is an impressive and creative effort that brings together Aligarh, nostalgia, storytelling, and emerging AI technology in a fascinating way.

I would strongly encourage fellow Aligs to watch the movie in its entirety. Beyond enjoying the story, it is worth appreciating the imagination, time, and effort Suhail has invested in exploring a completely new medium of filmmaking.

Press Release

Aligarh Alumni Association, Washington, DC (AAA-DC)

Date: September 17, 2026

The Aligarh Alumni Association of Washington DC (AAA-DC) is deeply saddened to announce the passing of Dr. Suman Vardan, a distinguished alumnus of Aligarh Muslim University, where he
earned his Bachelor of Science degree.

Dr. Vardan, who immigrated to the United States and practiced medicine with dedication, eventually made the Washington, D.C., Maryland, and Virginia (DMV) region his home. Beyond his professional achievements as a respected physician, he was a gifted poet and an active participant in AAA-DC cultural events, particularly the Kavi Sammelan and Mushaira, where he regularly shared his poignant and beautiful poetry.

Known for his warm, friendly, and gracious nature, Dr. Vardan touched the lives of all who had the privilege of knowing him. His presence and contributions have enriched our community, and his loss is felt deeply by all members of AAA-DC.

Our heartfelt condolences and prayers are with his wife, Ashaji, and the entire family during this time of sorrow. May God bless his soul and grant him eternal peace.
