Columbia Pro Cantare's Saturday, May 2, 8 pm concert, Sing Democracy 250, at the Jim Rouse Theatre presents two works commissioned by the Together in Hope Project: Redeem the Dream and US. "I'm excited that Pro Cantare is participating in this national project which will feature 175 choruses in 30 states singing these two newly commissioned works," says Artistic Director Laura Lee Fischer.

Redeem the Dream by Brandon Boyd adapts the Declaration of Independence and Langston Hughes' poem Let America Be America Again to explore the promises and ideals of the American Dream while asking whether the dream has been fulfilled for everyone. Its six movements express a variety of musical styles, from gospel to classical to R&B to jazz.

US by Michael Bussewitz-Quarm adapts a book called The Bill of Obligations by Richard Haas. For each of the Ten Habits of Good Citizens, different Americans throughout history and across the political spectrum are quoted, from Thomas Jefferson and Frederick Douglass to Ronald Reagan and Sandra Day O'Connor.

"Both pieces are joyful and accessible," says Fischer. "It is my hope that this concert demonstrates the potential for celebrating the values that continue to unite us after 250 years."

Columbia Pro Cantare will join in the celebration of America's 250th in a concert on May 2, 2026, 8 pm at the Jim Rouse Theatre. The concert, “Sing Democracy 250!”, features two works commissioned by the Together in Hope project: “Redeem the Dream’ and “US.” The chorus is under the direction of Laura Lee Fischer.

“Redeem the Dream,” composed by Brandon A. Boyd, is based on the Langston Hughes’ poem, “Let America Be America Again,” which reflects the gap between the ideals of American democracy and the reality for many people in U.S. history. “US,” composed by Michael Bussewitz-Quarm, is based on Richard Haass’ book, “The Bill of Obligations: The Ten Habits of Good Citizens.” “US” contains quotes from a diverse group of Americans—from the Founding Fathers to the current generation—that explain the obligations of citizens and how they have been practiced over the years.
“The Star-Spangled Banner” and “Lift Every Voice and Sing,” performed by the full chorus and the Columbia Pro Cantare Chamber Singers, complete the program. A pre-concert lecture at 7 pm will provide insight into the works, and the concert will be followed by a reception. For ticket information, visit www.procantare.org
