Columbia Pro Cantare will join in the celebration of America's 250th in a concert on May 2, 2026, 8 pm at the Jim Rouse Theatre. The concert, “Sing Democracy 250!”, features two works commissioned by the Together in Hope project: “Redeem the Dream’ and “US.” The chorus is under the direction of Laura Lee Fischer.
“Redeem the Dream,” composed by Brandon A. Boyd, is based on the Langston Hughes’ poem, “Let America Be America Again,” which reflects the gap between the ideals of American democracy and the reality for many people in U.S. history. “US,” composed by Michael Bussewitz-Quarm, is based on Richard Haass’ book, “The Bill of Obligations: The Ten Habits of Good Citizens.” “US” contains quotes from a diverse group of Americans—from the Founding Fathers to the current generation—that explain the obligations of citizens and how they have been practiced over the years.
“The Star-Spangled Banner” and “Lift Every Voice and Sing,” performed by the full chorus and the Columbia Pro Cantare Chamber Singers, complete the program. A pre-concert lecture at 7 pm will provide insight into the works, and the concert will be followed by a reception. For ticket information, visit www.procantare.org
