Another training day with eight of our volunteers working with Volunteer Fire Company #1 of Chesapeake City, Inc. , Cecilton Vol. Fire Co and Hacks Point Volunteer Fire Company to educate them with hands on learning using our mannequinns for Large Animal Emergency Rescue Training.

Thanks to a genorous sponsor we were able to hold this training at no cost to the first responders and Unicorn Farm donated the use of their indoor for the rainy day activity.

Volunteers finished the day by power washing equipment and our trailer to be ready for our next callout. We have responded to 67 calls so far this year.

/11/2026 Loose pony with cart on Rt 273 at Fair Hill,MD is caught. I was initially notified by a passing motorist on my personal cell of the incident while working for an equine ambulance at the Devon Horse Show today, 75 miles from the scene. I instructed the person to call 911 and I would notify the Duty Ranger. Thanks to the cyclist that caught the pony.

Please call 911 for any emergency with animals so proper first responders can be appropriately notified. The 911call center has the Fair Hill Emergency Response Team number as a resource. We only respond to owner, veterinarian or 911 request for assstance and do not self deploy.

If you are at Fair Hill NRMA and need assistance you can call the Duty Ranger at 410-218-1698.

Fair Hill Emergency Response Team number is 443-810-5777 and we are on call 24/7.

Recently, I’ve been seeing more horse emergencies where owners are completely unprepared.

Owning a horse means being prepared for the difficult situations too—not just the fun stuff.

Do you have a stocked first-aid kit and basic emergency medications? Do you know how to give an IM injection—and, if your veterinarian directs you to, are you capable of administering IV medication? Are you established with a good equine veterinarian who makes farm calls? Do you have a backup veterinarian?

Do you have access to a truck and trailer at 2 a.m.? An emergency veterinary fund? A plan for getting your horse to a hospital if necessary?

And the hardest questions: If your horse is suffering and emergency euthanasia becomes necessary, are you emotionally prepared to make that decision and capable of following through? Do you have a plan for removing your horse’s body? Do you know what happens afterward?

These aren’t fun things to think about, but they are part of responsible horse ownership.

Your barn owner can help. Your trainer can help. Your experienced horse friends can help.

But ultimately, your horse is your responsibility.

Make the plan before you need it. An emergency is a terrible time to start figuring everything out.

End of an era, the Fair Hill Hounds!

The tradition of fox hunting was the reason William DuPont purchased land to make his own private retreat for raising cattle, race horses and enjoyment of the sport.

The group is no longer active and donated what was left in their account to local non profits. Fair Hill Emergency Response Team was lucky to be one of the chosen.

We greatly appreciate the donation to better serve our equine community and will be used to help train first responders and equestrians in large animal emergency rescue techniques.

Call out #62 for 2026

New Bolton Field Service veterinarian called at 306am to request help with a horse with a broken leg on a railroad trestle bridge 6 miles north of the Philadelphia airport(49 miles away). Local police had found the horse hobbling across the active track after a report from train conductor at 1am. No local resources were found by the police in the Philly area to assist with the treatment and transport of horse.

Arrived on scene at 430 am. Had to back down a narrow, dark alley about 300 yards to get equine ambulance closer to the scene.

Police halted all train service on that track as they waited for the team to arrive. No farms, riding centers or private owners were found in the middle of that section of the concrete jungle. Due to the severity of the injury the horse was euthanized.

Trestle bridge was located about 100 yards up a stone hillside with numerous poles and concrete barriers making recovery of the horse very difficult.

Horse was placed on the glide and with the assistance of 12 Philadelphia police officers, the horse was maneuvered over the double tracks and lower down the stone hillside using 30 ft straps to the six foot high retaining wall. Straps were readjusted to lower to the roadway and the police officers pulled the glide into the trailer.

Horse was taken to New Bolton to be held hoping the owner would be found to claim their horse.

Transport was completed at 745 am. The incident is not complete untill all equipment is washed and sanitized.

Thank you to all the Philadelphia police officers that assisted with this incident and got a crash course in Large Animal Emergency Rescue.
