On March 30th, 1912, 238 years after the Cecil County Sheriff’s Office was formed, Sheriff John Myron Miller was shot and killed in the line of duty. His murder marked the first line of duty death the agency experienced. It is up to us to keep his, and those who laid down before us, memory alive and remember their sacrifice, honoring that the may be gone, but NEVER forgotten.

Sheriff J. Myron Miller was shot and killed by a man who had been given shelter at the county jail in Elkton for three years.

Sheriff Miller had asked the man to lay sawdust down in the jail's stables and the man refused unless he was to be paid. The sheriff then, acting on information he had previously received, asked the man for a weapon he owned. The man put the weapon against Sheriff Miller's right side and shot him. Sheriff Miller was able to walk to his office where he collapsed and died. The suspect was taken into custody by two nearby workers.

The suspect, who had been showing signs of dementia, was adjudged insane and sent to the state mental hospital where he died on March 23rd, 1926.

Sheriff Miller was survived by his wife, who witnessed the incident.

Today we honor and remember K9 Kilo of the Cecil County Sheriff's Office.

Handled by Sgt. J. Pristash, Kilo proudly served our community from 2014-2022, giving his loyalty, courage, and heart to every call and every mission.

K9 Kilo passed away peacefully, surrounded by his loving family — a fitting farewell for a partner who gave so much and asked for so little. He was more than a working dog; he was a protector, a teammate, and a true pillar of the Cecil County community.

Thank you, Kilo, for your years of faithful service and unwavering dedication.

You will never be forgotten. Rest easy, partner.
