Today we celebrate Sigmund Bergmann, a German-American engineer and business associate of Edison. At the age of 18, Bergman immigrated to the United States to study mechanical engineering. He was employed by Thomas Edison and later formed his own company to manufacture electronic devices such as telephones and telegraphs. He later founded the S. Bergmann & Co. firm, a subsidiary of the Edison Electric Light Company and later General Electric. By 1900, Bergmann was back in Berlin working with the Berlin branch of S. Bergmann & Co. and the Bergmann Electromotor and Dynamo Works. During World War 1, Bergmann began manufacturing devices for the German government and continued to manufacture devices after the war. He died July 7, 1927.

Happy 157th Birthday to Edison's first patent, the Electric Vote Recorder! This invention would have made recording legislative bodies votes easy, accurate, and efficient. However, Edison's vote recorder was never used. Upon being shown the invention, the chairman of the congress committee was unimpressed and told him that "if there is any invention on earth that we don't want down here, that is it." The slow pace of roll call voting in Congress and other legislatures enabled members to filibuster legislation or convince others to change their votes.
