Join Us at the MultiCultural Festival!

The Ager Association will be at the MultiCultural Festival at the Phoenix Park Pavilion on Sunday, September 13, from 11:30 a.m.–4:30 p.m.

We’re looking for volunteers to help at our table during the following shifts:

Noon–1:30 p.m. | 1:30–3 p.m. | 3–4:30 p.m.

We’ll have Ager Association books for sale, membership information, and hope to feature some rosemaling and other Norwegian cultural traditions.

We’d also like to introduce festival visitors to kubb, the traditional Scandinavian lawn game. We’re hoping to set up a kubb pitch on the south side of the Park from approximately 1–2 p.m. If you can help set up or demonstrate the game, please let us know!

Help Us Welcome UWEC Students!

The Ager Association will have a table at the Welcome to UWEC Students event at Haymarket Plaza on Friday, September 4, from 5–8 p.m.

We’re looking for volunteers to help staff our table during these one-hour shifts:

5–6 p.m. | 6–7 p.m. | 7–8 p.m.

We’ll have Ager Association books available for purchase, membership information, and pins and wristbands to hand out while supplies last.

It’s a great opportunity to welcome new students to Eau Claire and introduce them to the Ager Association and our Norwegian-American heritage.

One of the most interesting secrets of Norwegian rosemaling is that many traditional painters deliberately hid tiny personal “signatures” within the design instead of signing their name.

In the 1700s and early 1800s, rural rosemalers often traveled from farm to farm decorating furniture, walls, and bridal chests. Rather than leaving an obvious signature—which wasn’t always considered appropriate—they might identify their work through subtle details such as:

* A distinctive shape of a leaf curl.
* A unique way of ending a vine or scroll.
* An unusual flower petal arrangement.
* A tiny bird or whimsical creature tucked into the foliage.

Art historians can sometimes identify the anonymous painter simply by these recurring stylistic “fingerprints.”
