ALERT REGARDING WILD ANIMALS:
The Florida Department of Health in Franklin County (DOH-Franklin) is monitoring rabies among wild animals in the area in response to a SINGLE confirmed case of rabies in a fox that was killed off County Highway 67 on June 10. All residents and visitors should be aware that rabies may be currently present in the wild animal population.

Our area is home to a variety of animal species. People and domestic animals should always avoid physical contact with wild animals such as raccoons, bats, foxes, skunks, otters, bobcats, and coyotes, which carry a higher risk of human exposure and a need for rabies post-exposure treatment. If you are exposed to rabies, receiving appropriate treatment after exposure will protect you from the risk of rabies.

DOH-Franklin advises everyone take the following precautions:
• Immunize pets and livestock based on your veterinarian’s recommended schedule.
• Keep pets under direct supervision and on a leash, and keep livestock secured on your property. If an animal bites your pet or livestock, seek veterinary assistance for the animal immediately and contact Franklin County Animal Control at (850) 670-4733.
• Do not handle, feed, or unintentionally attract wild animals with outdoor pet food, open garbage cans, or other sources of food. If you have been bitten or scratched by a wild or domestic animal, seek medical attention, and report the injury to DOH-Franklin by calling (850) 653-2111.
• Never adopt wild animals or bring them into your home; instead contact a licensed wildlife rehabilitator.

Celebrate Independence Day bayside at the Eastpoint Freedom Festival hosted by the Eastpoint Civic Association. Beginning around 6 p.m. at the Patton Street Boat Ramp, the festival features live music, local food trucks, family-friendly fun, and a laid-back community atmosphere along the waterfront. As the evening winds down, gather along the Bay for a fireworks display.

Kick off the celebration in Carrabelle with the community's annual Independence Day fireworks display along the beautiful Carrabelle River. Arrive early to browse the town's unique shops, enjoy dinner at one of Carrabelle's locally owned restaurants, and discover the charm of this historic fishing community. Before the fireworks, join in the community's festive Golf Cart Parade. Bring your decorated golf cart, bicycle, or walk along. Then gather along the waterfront for an evening fireworks show over the river.

𝐀𝐩𝐚𝐥𝐚𝐜𝐡𝐢𝐜𝐨𝐥𝐚 • 𝐉𝐮𝐥𝐲 𝟑
Historic Apalachicola comes alive with patriotic spirit during its annual Waterfront July 3rd Celebration at Riverfront Park hosted by the Apalachicola Bay Chamber of Commerce & Visitor Center. Enjoy live music, food vendors, and family-friendly fun beginning at 5 p.m., then join the beloved Red, White & Blue Parade. Bring your decorated golf cart, bicycle, wagon, skateboard, or simply walk along in your red, white, and blue. Parade participants should line up at 6:00 p.m. at Lafayette Park, with the parade stepping off at 6:30 p.m. The evening concludes with a spectacular fireworks display over the Apalachicola River.

𝐒𝐭. 𝐆𝐞𝐨𝐫𝐠𝐞 𝐈𝐬𝐥𝐚𝐧𝐝 • 𝐉𝐮𝐥𝐲 𝟒
The legendary SGI 4th Of July Wet n Wild Water Parade returns for one of the most unique Independence Day traditions on the coast. Decorate your golf cart, float, bike, vehicle, or walking group and prepare for a patriotic water fight unlike any other. Expect plenty of water, lots of laughter, and small-town Fourth of July fun before ending the day with fireworks over the Gulf.

As America celebrates its 250th birthday, we invite you to celebrate with us! From July 1 through July 4, communities across Florida's Forgotten Coast will be filled with patriotic spirit, waterfront fireworks, hometown traditions, and plenty of red, white, and blue! 🇺🇸

Owners and guests don't want to miss this unique opportunity to witness a sea turtle release at the St. George Lighthouse.

Meet Salami! 🐢

On May 31, this juvenile sea turtle arrived at Gulf Specimen Marine Lab after becoming tangled in fishing line. Thanks to a quick response and expert care from our sea turtle team, Salami received a full examination, including X-rays and a veterinary evaluation.

We're happy to report that Salami is in great shape and has been cleared for release! After a short stay with us, it's time for her to head back to her ocean home where she belongs.

Join us this Thursday as we release Salami back into the Gulf and watch her swim home! There's nothing quite like seeing a rescued sea turtle return to the wild.

Thank you to everyone who helps support sea turtle rescue and rehabilitation along Florida's coast. Every rescue makes a difference!

Today, June 1, is officially the start of hurricane season. Here's what the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration predicts for the year.

And here's a few helpful tips:
- Review your evacuation plan and know your evacuation route.
- Check for updated and accurate information on local and national emergency notification sites like the National Hurricane Center and NOAA. (Links below.)
- Assemble or update your emergency kit with water, nonperishable food, medications, flashlights, batteries, headlamps, fully charged power banks and solar-powered chargers, pet food, battery-powered NOAA weather radio, and important documents.
- Check insurance coverage and photograph valuable property.
- Trim trees, secure outdoor furniture and loose items, and inspect shutters or storm protection systems.
- Ensure mobile devices can receive emergency alerts and weather notifications.
- Keep important phone numbers readily available and be sure phones are charged and vehicles are gassed/charged.
