π’π A Few Friendly Turtle Tips from the SGI Sea Turtle Patrol ππ’
We are so excited that you're following along with our nesting season. Every nest and every little turtle name tag, means so much to us.
Please remember that much of St. George Island is private property, so be respectful of homeowners and always use public beach walkovers to access the beach.
β¨ Help us keep our beaches turtle-friendly:
Keep the beach Clean, Flat, and Dark
Fill in holes and knock down sandcastles before you leave
Take all trash and belongings with you
Turn off or minimize lights at night
π’ If you're lucky enough to see a nesting mama turtle, you've witnessed something truly special!
Give her plenty of space and remember:
STOP β’ DROP β’ ACT LIKE A ROCK!
Stay behind her, remain quiet, and stay out of her line of sight. Please do not use flash photography, as it can disturb her nesting process.
π¦ If you absolutely need a flashlight, please use a turtle-friendly red light. The wonderful folks at the St. George Island Lighthouse Gift Shop carry red flashlights designed to be safer for sea turtles. Better yet, try enjoying the beach without a light and take in the breathtaking stars above the Gulf!
π We are just as excited for you to see your name on a turtle nest marker as you are! Every tag is hand-cut, then laminated, and made with lots of love by our volunteers.
πΈ Feel free to visit your adopted nest and take photos, but please remember that sea turtles and their nests are federally protected. You may photograph your nest marker, but please do not touch the nest, place anything around it, or disturb the nesting area in any way.
Together, we can help give these incredible animals the best chance for success. Thank you for supporting sea turtle conservation and for helping us protect St. George Island's nesting mothers and hatchlings! ππ’π
Happy Turtle Season! π’β¨π
