Starry stonewort is spreading and our window to act is now. Every boater, every shoreline owner, every visitor can make a difference. Protecting Lake Beulah starts with the choices we make today.

Here’s how we stay ahead of it together:

Clean, Drain, Dry
Make it a habit every single time. Clean, drain, and dry boats, trailers, and gear before entering or leaving the lake.

Support CBCW Inspections
Clean Boats, Clean Waters teams are on the front lines. A quick conversation at the launch helps keep invasive species out.

Monitor & Report
Join shoreline surveys and report unusual plant growth immediately. Early detection is our strongest advantage.

Follow Adaptive Management
Community leaders are evaluating tools to remediate the threat. Staying informed helps us respond quickly and effectively.

Lake Beulah is resilient but needs our help. Small actions taken now protect the water for seasons to come.

Wearing a life jacket whenever you’re hunting, fishing, boating, swimming, or playing in open water (lakes, rivers, ponds, etc.) helps ensure that you can keep on living the good life enjoying the water.

Western Lakes Community Risk Reduction Bureau - Summer Boating Safety

Before you head out on the water, take a minute to run through the basics with everyone on board:

Make sure every passenger has a properly fitted, U.S. Coast Guard-approved life jacket buckled on — it's the single most effective way to prevent drowning in an emergency.

Designate a sober operator before leaving the dock. Alcohol and drugs significantly impair reaction time, balance, and decision-making on the water.

Before untying your lines, check the local weather forecast, inspect your vessel's required safety equipment (flares, fire extinguisher, working horn or whistle), and share a quick float plan with someone on shore — where you're going and when you'll be back.

Operating at safe, controlled speeds and staying alert for swimmers, kayaks, and hidden obstacles helps make sure everyone makes it back to land safely with great memories!

Keep yourself and your pets safe from harmful algae.

Warmer springs and heavier rains are changing Wisconsin’s lakes, rivers, and ponds, making harmful algal blooms more likely. As temperatures rise and runoff carries more nutrients into our waterways, these blooms can threaten surface water, recreation, and our pets.

Small actions like reducing fertilizer, planting native buffers, and supporting local water protection go a long way toward keeping our waters safe.

Worried about Starry Stonewort? Here are three signs to spot it:

Smooth stem (native plants feel rough and crunchy)

Uneven, crooked branches in bunches of 4 to 8

Tiny white star-shaped bulbils along the stem

It also grows taller than native plants, sometimes over 3 feet.

See all three? You've likely found starry stonewort. Share this with your local DNR Aquatic Invasive Species specialist or a PLB Board Member so we can help prevent its spread in Lake Beulah.
