The Irish word "draiocht" - pronounced roughly "dree-ocht" expresses a magic that lives in the landscape. "It is the quality of certain places and certain moments when the ordinary world reveals that it has more in it than it usually shows." Sensing draiocht requires a presence and attention with that place and time. Children naturally practice this tendency of "tuning" into their surroundings.
We witnessed and experienced this quality of Magic over this last week in our Permaculture Camp. As we opened our whole selves to the question of "How do we live in right relationship with Earth?" on the cusp of Summer Solstice energy, the Woods was alive with expression. Draiocht is an additional perception, a recognition that the full description of reality includes the quality of what it feels like to stand in a specific place at a specific moment. This is how we truly listen to Land and live and work alongside. So grateful the children can help us remember that essential practice of presence on this learning journey...
