The Smith Residence in Dedham, Massachusetts - a Greek Revival home designed by Dell Mitchell Architects and honored with the 2010 Bulfinch Award for both Architecture and Landscape Architecture. 🏛️

Last Thursday, ICAA New England members had the rare opportunity to tour the house and grounds, guided by Dell Mitchell on the interiors and John Haven of LeBlanc Jones Landscape Architects through the gardens, terraces, and long views that frame the hilltop site.🌳

The house draws on classical principles of symmetry, proportion, and sequence - and seeing it in person makes clear why it endures as a model of contemporary classical design.

In the 1870s and 1880s, the Ames family commissioned H.H. Richardson to transform North Easton, Massachusetts - and what he left behind remains one of the greatest concentrations of Richardsonian Romanesque architecture in America.

On May 2nd, members of the ICAA New England Chapter had the rare opportunity to explore five of these sites up close: the Ames Free Library (1877), Oakes Ames Memorial Hall (1881), the North Easton Train Station (1881), the Ames Gate Lodge (1881), and Spring Hill - the William Hadwen Ames Estate, whose grounds were designed by the Olmsted Brothers and are currently undergoing an extensive restoration.
The tour was generously led by Christopher DeOrsay of DeOrsay Campbell Smith Architects.

On Saturday, May 30th, ICAA New England members and guests gathered at ART Architects () for an Introduction to Travel Sketching, a hands-on workshop led by JB Clancy () and Duran Fernandez-O’Brien ()

The morning began in the studio, where participants explored foundational techniques for capturing places quickly and expressively. After a shared lunch, the group headed out to Quincy Market to put those skills to work, sketchbooks open, pencils up, eyes on one of Boston’s most storied civic spaces.

Travel sketching is one of the oldest tools in the classical tradition. To draw a building is to truly see it. We’re grateful to JB and Duran for sharing their expertise, and to everyone who joined - beginners and experienced drawers alike.

On April 30th, ICAA New England Chapter President Nancy Berry joined Lady Elinor Crane at the Boston Design Center’s Spring Market for a keynote conversation on the interiors of Bunny Mellon - a beautiful look at how one design icon’s vision continues to inspire. Though Sir Peter Crane was unable to join, his presence was felt throughout.

The conversation was a perfect reflection of this year’s theme: Living Forward, the past as the blueprint for the future. We couldn’t think of a more fitting stage for our chapter’s work. 🌷
