Three women have died at Women's Huron Valley Correctional Facility in less than a month.

Today, we hold their families, loved ones, and the women who remain incarcerated in our hearts. Every person in state custody is a human being whose life has value and dignity.

As an organization led by formerly incarcerated people, Nation Outside believes these deaths should concern every Michigander. The conditions in our prisons, jails, and detention centers reflect our collective values as a society. How we treat people when they are entirely dependent on the state for their safety, healthcare, and well-being matters.

The women at WHV, their families, correctional staff, and the public deserve transparency, accountability, and answers. Every death in custody should be thoroughly examined, not only to understand what happened, but to prevent future tragedies.

This moment calls for more than concern—it calls for action. We urge state leaders, the Michigan Department of Corrections, advocates, and community members to work together toward real solutions that prioritize human dignity, quality healthcare, safe conditions, and accountability.

A society is ultimately judged by how it treats those in its care. We can, and must, do better.

A third woman has died at Michigan's only women's prison since mid-May, amid ongoing concerns over health and facility conditions.
