It’s Michigan College Month and our first visit back at Cody High School this fall! Sanaa’-Marie discussed the importance of FAFSA and the team assisted the students with setting up their FAFSA ID to apply for financial aid. Wayne County Executive Warren Evans tried to stop a huge tax break for Google’s planned data center in Van Buren Township, known as “Project Cannoli.”

Evans vetoed the deal because he said county leaders were being pushed to approve it too fast, without enough time to study what the massive data center could mean for local roads, water, energy, the environment and taxpayers.

But the Wayne County Commission has the power to override his veto with enough votes. The Commission took the issue back up today after previously approving the tax deal.

The tax breaks are worth about $125 million. That means Google could avoid paying roughly $125 million in local taxes over the life of the deal.

So the basic story is pretty simple: Warren Evans said, “Slow down and figure out what this giant data center will actually cost the community.”

The Commission decided to keep moving forward with the tax breaks anyway.
