It's an exciting day for Delaware! We joined Governor Matt Meyer, the Delaware Department of Health and Social Services (DHSS), legislators, DHA members, and countless stakeholders to celebrate the First State's first medical school.

DHA commends Governor Meyer and his Administration’s leadership on bringing a medical school to Delaware and congratulates Thomas Jefferson University on this announcement. Expanding the healthcare workforce is essential to meet the demands of our uniquely growing and aging population. Delaware hospitals are committed to growing and investing in our caregivers and a medical school will strengthen the pipeline. Just this year, Delaware residency programs will bring a record high more than 250 new doctors to our hospitals and health systems, many specializing in primary care. Governor Meyer’s rural health transformation vision supports innovation, workforce, access, affordability, and more.

DHA looks forward to our continued collaboration with the Administration, legislators, and our First State Health Leaders Alliance partners as we work together to make the First State First in Health.

SS 2 for Senate Bill 1 passed the Senate unanimously today. We appreciate the collaborative leadership of Senator Bryan Townsend, the Delaware Department of Insurance and Medical Society of Delaware on this critically important issue. The amended legislation supports primary care and addresses healthcare affordability.

Delaware hospitals are doing their part to lead the way on affordability solutions and we thank legislative leaders for recognizing the unique challenges of our growing and aging state as well as the major headwinds we face as a result of federal policies. One thing is certain: Our hospitals will continue showing up 24/7/365 to care for Delawareans in their time of need. Let’s keep working together to Make the First State First in Health.

The Delaware Healthcare Association is proud to support SS 2 for Senate Bill 1. We appreciate Senator Bryan Townsend’s collaborative leadership and partnership on our shared priorities of supporting primary care and improving healthcare affordability. This is yet another example of Delaware hospitals leading the way on collaborative solutions with policymakers and the First State Health Leaders Alliance. The bill is on today's Senate agenda.

We look forward to continuing working together to make the First State First in Health. It's imperative to be laser-focused on what lies ahead: federal policies that will lead to more uninsured individuals, rising emergency department wait times and more uncertainty. Delaware hospitals stand to lose $200 million annually due to federal Medicaid changes. We are being challenged to do more with less in our uniquely growing and aging state. As healthcare leaders, we embrace these challenges, and we need our policymakers to fight the tides with us. Let's keep making progress, together. Read our statement at the link below.

This week, we were pleased to see legislation ensuring access to high-quality care and strengthening the healthcare workforce signed into law!

House Bill 17 supports healthcare access by removing a barrier health systems face when investing in major medical equipment. House Bill 325 ensures physician associates can practice at the top of their licenses, which can help address provider shortages, improve patient access and reduce delays in care. These are important efforts in our uniquely growing and aging state.

Thank you Rep. Kerri Evelyn Harris, Rep. Alonna Berry, Sen. Marie Pinkney, and Senator Nicole Poore for championing these efforts.
