🍽️ Culture Crawl Episode 6! This time, we’re visiting Fresh Food Generation | Caribbean-American Restaurant in Dorchester, a CommonWealth Kitchen member bringing farm-to-plate Caribbean and modern American cuisine to the community.

🧀 Heli and Kelly Silva are bringing their love of Brazilian pão de queijo — a naturally gluten-free cheese bread — to farmers’ markets across Massachusetts. After balancing full-time jobs, raising two children, and building their business, the couple recently took the leap to make Galley Provisions their full-time focus.

🏠 We’re proud to have Galley Provisions as part of the Commonwealth Kitchen community as they grow their business and work toward their goal of putting Brazilian cheese bread in freezers across the country.

🌱 Last week, we were thrilled to welcome students from the Boston University Social Impact MBA program to CommonWealth Kitchen!

👩🏽‍🍳 As future leaders working at the intersection of economic, ethical, legal, and social responsibility, the students heard from Cassandria Campbell, owner and operator of Fresh Food Generation, as well as CommonWealth Kitchen’s Entrepreneur in Residence. Her stories and insights offered a firsthand look at the realities of building and leading food businesses and how CWK helps support this work for local entrepreneurs.

🍎 We’re honored to have supported Boston Area Gleaners, Inc.’s June Food Day by donating MA250 Gift Boxes for their raffle fundraiser. Together, we helped raise funds that will fill produce boxes, fuel delivery trucks, and power coolers, ensuring fresh, local food reaches the families who need it most.

🥟 Member Spotlight Magic Empanadas Boston

“We want to bring Colombian flavors to Boston in a way that fits people’s daily lives. I grew up eating empanadas, and I wanted to share that same experience, something fast, comforting, and made with tradition.” - Edward Jerez, the founder of Magic Empanadas

🌽 What makes Magic Empanadas special? “We focus on 100% corn-based dough, which makes our empanadas naturally gluten-free, and we’ve built a system where everything is handmade, consistent, and easy to prepare.” Their goal is simple: to deliver restaurant-quality food in a format that works for cafés, events, and retail.

✨ The moment they realized this could become something more came through the people they served. “When I saw how people reacted the first time they tried our empanadas. It wasn’t just food, it created a connection. That’s when I realized this could be more than a hobby.”

💡 One of the biggest lessons in building the business has been learning to trust the process. “One of the biggest challenges was thinking I had to do everything myself. The turning point was building and training a team. Once we created a system and trusted our process, we were able to grow and operate consistently without depending on me being there every day.”

🌎 By bringing authentic Colombian empanadas to cafés, markets, and commuter spaces, Magic Empanadas is adding something both traditional and practical to Boston’s food scene. “Consistency is everything. It’s not just about making a great product once—it’s about delivering the same quality every single time.”
