It started with 71 people and a simple idea: get people out of the room and into the developments.

In October 2022, READ hosted its first Developer Bus Tour with 71 attendees.

The purpose was bigger than touring buildings.

We wanted people to see development happening in Detroit firsthand, hear directly from the developers doing the work, ask real questions, and better understand what it actually takes to move a project from an idea to completion.

But we also understood something else: development doesn’t happen alone.

It takes developers.
It takes lenders and capital partners.
It takes real estate professionals.
It takes contractors and architects.
It takes insurance professionals, engineers, consultants, community partners, and so many others working together to get a project across the finish line.

So the Bus Tour became about more than what we could show you.

It became about who we could put on the bus with you.

Four years later, looking back at these photos and realizing that we've more than doubled the number of people participating in the Bus Tour is incredible.

And with every tour, we learn.

We listen to what worked. We identify what could be better. We introduce new projects, new development types, new conversations, and new people who can help move this work forward.

Because the goal has never been just to drive around Detroit and look at buildings.

The goal is access.
The goal is education.
The goal is connection.

To give aspiring and established developers a closer look at how projects actually get done, while putting them in proximity to the people, resources, and relationships that can help them do it too.

From 71 people in 2022 to more than double that four years later, we’re proud of how far the READ Developer Bus Tour has come.

And we're still getting better.
