Today, for AANHPI Month, we are looking back at a sobering moment in labor history: The Chinese Exclusion Act of 1882.

This was the first federal law to ban a specific ethnic group from entering the U.S., fueled by the xenophobic claim that Chinese laborers were "stealing" opportunities from white workers. But history shows us that exclusion harms everyone.

After the Act passed, manufacturing output in the American West plummeted by up to 62%, leading to a decline in employment for non-Chinese male workers and crippling essential sectors like mining and agriculture.

The lesson is clear: When we allow ourselves to be divided by race or origin, the working class loses. True solidarity means recognizing that an injury to one is an injury to all.

There is a really great exhibit for Local 310 in the USW museum. Out of 1000s of locals, we are one of the few to be featured. If you’re off work at 10 AM or 7 PM tomorrow and not busy, log in to the Teaching Tuesday to hopefully see some Local 310 history.

Join us for a very special Teaching Tuesday where we take a virtual tour of the USW museum at the International Headquarters! This museum holds incredible artifacts and images from a proud history of solidarity and struggle. (Admission is free, and you can eat and drink whatever you want from the comfort of your home 😁).
