What a spectacular day of learning!

How do you find volunteers who are guided by your nonprofit's "north star"? What is your plan for fortifying volunteer management within your nonprofit?

A crucial part of nonprofit work that simply cannot be overlooked is volunteer administration, and that's what the Leadership Veteran Cohort of 2026 focused on during Session 7 last Friday, April 3rd.

We are so grateful for the expertise and guidance of our instructors: Tracy Vlnicka (AD, Volunteer and Visitor Experience, Denver Botanic Gardens), Abby Krstulic (Volunteer Manager, Habitat for Humanity of Metro Denver), and Heather Jackson, CVA (Manager, Volunteer Services, UCHealth at their hospital in Greeley).

Heather, Abby, and Tracy gave the cohort a multitude of resources and practical advice to implement strong, purposeful infrastructure for volunteer administration. The cohort explored everything from volunteer recruitment, to risk management, to volunteer training, to succession planning, and many other volunteer essentials. We are so grateful for your time and expertise Abby, Heather, and Tracy!

The Leadership Veteran Cohort is where nonprofit leaders access crucial expertise, practical workshopping, and valuable connections with veteran-serving organizations like them. We hope you'll join us in the future - check out information about the 2027 cohort here: https://lnkd.in/gzrJ8bhC

Get ready to meet another incredible member of the Leadership Veteran Cohort of 2026: Katherine Crocker!

Kat has a BA in Recreation Profession/Therapeutic Recreation from Metropolitan State University of Denver, and she has been working as a Recreational Therapist within the VA Eastern Colorado Healthcare system for many years. Her expertise and wealth of experience are huge assets to her org, The Adaptive Performance Project.

As Founder and Executive Director of The Adaptive Performance Project, Kat is seeking to empower inclusion in adaptive fitness and sport. Her organization is guided by the motto “Adapt. Perform. Excel.”, and they are working to empower adaptive athletes through inclusive training, resources, and opportunities. During Kat's time in the cohort, The Adaptive Performance Project hit a major milestone by securing its 501(c)(3) status, opening new doors to expand their impact.

Within the Leadership Veteran Cohort of 2026, Kat’s hard work is unmistakable. She consistently brings an intense focus to every session, puts in the work between meetings, and fully leans into the cohort’s accountability factor. Kat is quick to translate ideas into action, and her thoughtful questions often spark the “aha” moments that move the entire cohort forward.

We’re proud to have Kat in the cohort and are excited to see The Adaptive Performance Project continue to grow and lead the way in inclusive sport! Be sure to give them a follow over on LinkedIn (www.linkedin.com/TheAdaptivePerformanceProject) and here on Facebook (The Adaptive Performance Project).

No matter where an organization is in its journey, there’s so much to learn and just as much to share. I’m grateful to represent The Adaptive Performance Project (TAPP) in a community committed to strengthening support for veterans together.
When we build alongside one another, the impact reaches further.

“Your job as a leader is to stay as close in touch as possible with those closest to the action.”
— Kat Cole, CEO of AG1

That idea sits at the heart of Leadership Veteran's work. We create space for veteran-serving nonprofit leaders to come together, learn from one another, and have real conversations about what’s working (and what’s challenging) so that no one is doing the work alone.

In our cohorts, leaders turn big ideas into next steps. They build confidence in areas like planning, operations, nonprofit finance, and board leadership, while also sharing resources and working through challenges side-by-side. The learning is practical, the conversations are honest, and the relationships last long after the cohort has graduated.

When leaders are supported and connected, the impact reaches farther, and veterans and their communities are better for it.

Last Friday, the Leadership Veteran Cohort of 2026 spent their morning digging into the complex world of Nonprofit Finance. We were so grateful to be joined by Paul Deckard, CPA, VP of Corporate Finance & Data at Wecom Fiber and Adjunct Professor at the College of Professional Studies at the University of Denver.

Paul spent time with the cohort breaking down the components of complex financial statements, net asset accounts, the wonderful world of GAAP, and so much more.

Members of the cohort, especially Jessica Rutherford and Janelle Mendelson, asked Paul technical finance questions that helped the group contextualize these abstract concepts in real-world examples.

We are so grateful to Paul for sharing his expertise - the cohort was laser focused as he helped to make this vital component of nonprofit management more accessible. Nonprofit Finance was one of the most anticipated topics for the cohort to tackle, and every cohort member left Friday's session with more knowledge about balance sheets, income savings, and cash flow for their orgs.

Another incredible day of work is under our belts! Shout out to the cohort of 2026 for their dedication, engagement, and support of each other as we step into the new year. Stay tuned for more updates from our most recent session!
