Denver Lions A group of community-minded professionals who volunteer to support sight & family-focused programs. Denver Lions lead programs to help people see and succeed.

An active organization, our members raise money, volunteer and direct sight- and family-focused programs. At weekly lunches, we network and learn about contemporary issues. We welcome anyone who believes in community service, friendship and the power of connection.

100 YEARS OLD.
And somehow still more accomplished than most of us before our second cup of coffee.

Lion Emerson is turning 100, and we’re celebrating a century of life — including 61 years as a Denver Lion.

Lion Em has served as Director, Secretary, President, Lion of the Year — twice — Melvin Jones Fellow — twice — Key Member, Life Member, Office Admin/Executive Director, and Rude Park President.

Basically, if Denver Lions has done something in the last six decades, there’s a decent chance Emerson was somewhere nearby making sure it actually happened.

So yes.
We’re throwing a party.

There will be cake.
There will be snacks.
There will be beverages.
There will almost certainly be people asking Emerson what his secret is.

Remember when you were 10, standing at a spelling bee, and suddenly the word “banana” looked like ancient Greek?

Your palms were sweating.
Your brain left the building.
And every adult in the room was staring at you like this was somehow normal.

Good times. 😂

Now imagine helping a kid feel a little more prepared for that kind of moment.

Lions Clubs host annual youth speech and public speaking contests designed to build confidence, leadership, and communication skills — with monetary prizes or scholarships as students advance through local, zone, district, and state levels.

So instead of growing up remembering public speaking as “that time my soul briefly left my body,” maybe they get to remember: “I did it.”
That’s pretty powerful.

👓 20,000 Eyeglasses better.

At our last Denver Den sorting event, 34 Lions, friends, and family members sorted approximately 20,000 pairs of donated eyeglasses.

You just find one of our drop boxes around the Denver Metro Area, drop them in, and carry on with your day like the wildly efficient humanitarian you now are.

That’s it.
No forms.
No fuss.
No awkward small talk.
No one is going to ask why there are six pairs in your glove compartment.

Your old glasses can go on to support vision programs and help people who need access to eyewear.

So clear out the drawer.
Empty the console.

We have food. Good food.

And, because apparently we know how to make community service competitive, we also have a limited number of seats.

Our next Denver Lions luncheon is coming up Tuesday, October 13 (next week), and joining us is Chris Gattegno, Executive Director of Aurora Community Connection.
Chris brings decades of leadership and human resources experience, including 15 years at the executive level, plus firsthand experience navigating cultural adjustment, language barriers, and access to services as an immigrant himself.

In other words:
Interesting speaker? Check.
Meaningful conversation? Check.
Lunch? Absolutely.
A suspiciously effective way to spend your Tuesday? Also yes.

You can look at Monday and think, “Ugh. Here we go again.”

Or…
You can look at Monday like it’s a fresh, innocent little week that has no idea what kind of absolute menace for good you’re about to be.

Your choice. 😂

You can dread the alarm.
Dread the emails.
Dread the meetings that should’ve been emails.
Dread the coffee not working fast enough.

OR…

You can decide this is the week you do something that actually matters.

Help someone.
Show up.
Volunteer.
Make a connection.
Change a life.
Maybe even change your own while you’re at it.

At the Denver Lions, we believe a week can go from “same nonsense, different day” to “wow, we actually made a difference” real fast.

So yes, Monday is here.

But instead of treating it like a personal attack, maybe treat it like an opportunity.

This is why we do what we do.

Not for the meetings.
Not for the emails.
Not even for the snacks.

For this.

Last week, the first family moved into Project Bluestem.

After years of instability, separation, and moving through different systems, a mother and her teenage son finally walked into a townhome of their own — not a temporary stop, not another short-term arrangement, but a real place to call home.

When she saw it for the first time, Mom kept asking, “Is this really just for us?”
Yes. It is.
And that moment is exactly why Project Bluestem matters.

Because families rebuilding their lives need more than “good luck.” They need housing, support, stability, and people willing to believe they’re worth investing in.

This family is the first.
Five more families will follow.

And that’s where the rest of us come in.
