Today, June 19, is both Juneteenth and World Sickle Cell Day. It's a reminder that sickle cell disease disproportionately impacts the Black community, but blood transfusions may help manage the disease.

Blood donors who are Black may have a unique ability to help these patients. Make an appointment today to give blood with the Red Cross: rcblood.org/37RKNdI

As Juneteenth and World Sickle Cell Day approach, we are recognizing the importance of blood donation and sharing stories from individuals whose lives depend on it.

Elizabeth Ganaway was diagnosed with sickle cell disease in 2017 and now relies on monthly blood transfusions, sometimes requiring up to 11 units of blood during a single exchange. Without blood donors, she says, her treatment would not be possible.

“It is critical that people donate blood because I am just one of many who requires monthly transfusions,” Elizabeth shared.

Sickle cell disease disproportionately affects Black communities, and blood donations from a diverse donor base are essential to helping patients receive the care they need.

Today, Elizabeth is giving back by encouraging others to donate and even hosted her own blood drive to help meet this critical need.

This Juneteenth and World Sickle Cell Day, consider making an appointment to give blood and help support patients like Elizabeth.

If you see someone who is in trouble in the water, remember: Reach or throw, don't go!

Use a reaching pole or an item that floats like ring buoy to assist someone in trouble without putting yourself at risk.

Summer's heat can be dangerous for your family pets; heat stroke is a real, dangerous risk for all animals in hot conditions.

Don't leave your pet in a hot vehicle; the temperature inside of a car can rise 20 degrees Fahrenheit in just 10 minutes and quickly reach 120 F, even with the windows cracked open.

Signs of heat stroke can include heavy panting; being unable to calm down, even when lying down; brick red gum color; fast pulse rate; and being unable to get up.

If you suspect your pet has heat stroke, take their temperature rectally. If the temperature is above 105 degrees, cool the animal down. The easiest way to do this is by using the water hose. Stop cooling the animal when the temperature reaches 103 degrees.

As we approach Juneteenth and World Sickle Cell Day, we honor the strength, resilience and stories of people living with sickle cell disease, while recognizing the critical need for blood donors.

Kayla Smith Owens was diagnosed with sickle cell disease at birth and received her first blood transfusion at just 12 years old. In 2023, complications after surgery led to multiple blood transfusions during a life-threatening medical crisis.

“Had I not received blood, I would not be here right now,” Kayla shared.

Sickle cell disease disproportionately impacts Black communities, and blood donations from diverse donors can help patients receive the best possible care. One donation can help save lives and bring hope to families facing medical challenges every day.

This Juneteenth and World Sickle Cell Day, join us in helping ensure blood is available for patients like Kayla.

World Blood Donor Day celebrates those whose donations save lives across the globe.

Every two seconds, someone in the United States desperately needs blood. Patients undergoing cancer treatment, trauma survivors, and individuals living with sickle cell disease are counting on donors right now to ensure lifesaving care reaches them when it is needed most.

The American Red Cross is grateful to the volunteer donors who roll up a sleeve to help others, often without ever knowing whose life they may change.

This year’s urgent World Blood Donor Day theme, “Give blood, give hope,” highlights that even one donation can immediately transform the life of a patient, their family, and their entire community.

Thank you to all who give. Your generosity helps create hope in moments when it matters most.

Spotting a swimmer in trouble may not always be as obvious as someone calling for help. Some of the signs to look for include:

- Someone who is not making forward progress in the water, or is unable to move or tread water
- Someone who is motionless or face down in the water
