Today, June 15, is World Elder Abuse Awareness Day, and June is recognized as World Elder Abuse Awareness Month.

This year marks the 20th anniversary of the global campaign to raise awareness about the abuse, neglect, and exploitation of older adults. Elder abuse can take many forms, including physical abuse, emotional abuse, neglect, self-neglect, and financial exploitation.

Every older adult deserves to live with dignity, safety, and respect. As a community, we all play a role in recognizing warning signs, checking in on loved ones and neighbors, and speaking up when something does not seem right.

If you suspect an older or vulnerable adult is being abused, neglected, or exploited, please make a report. In Maryland, you can report suspected adult abuse or neglect by calling 1-800-91-PREVENT (1-800-917-7383). If someone is in immediate danger, call 911.

Awareness can lead to action. Action can protect lives.
