The Caroline County Department of Social Services is currently recruiting for a full-time State Contractual Family Investment Specialist I to assist with determining eligibility for government programs and benefits.

Employment Information:
💵$22.63 per hour
📆Monday-Friday, 8am-5pm
🤩Eligible for State of Maryland subsidized health benefits.

Minimum Requirements:
Education: High School Diploma or GED.
Experience: Six months of public contact experience involving negotiating, interviewing, explaining information, gathering and compiling data, performing analysis of data, writing correspondence, and completing mathematical or legal tasks.
OR
Six months of general office, retail, food service, construction trades, or similar experience including data entry, record filing and maintenance, multi-line phone use, general computer skills and email software.

Showing our appreciation means being able to share stories of resilience, success and that "full circle" moment. Our incredible Computer Specialist II, Bola Aloba, brings all that and more to her role within our IT department here at the agency. Bola has been with our agency since April 2025 and she is an absolute ray of sunshine and we're so happy to highlight her during this LGA Appreciation Month!

We asked Bola what inspired her to pursue a career in public service or administrative support, and in typical Bola fashion she shared her story of resilience to answer such a question:

"My inspiration to pursue a career in public service comes from my own experience receiving public assistance during a very difficult time in my life. After losing my job and being unemployed for several months, I needed help supporting my family. I went to Caroline County DSS to apply for Temporary Cash Assistance, SNAP, and energy assistance. During that challenging period, the staff treated me with kindness, respect, and compassion. They took the time to help me understand the resources available to me and provided the support my children and I needed to get through those difficult months.

That experience left a lasting impression on me. I remember hoping that one day I would be in a position to give back and help other families who may find themselves in similar circumstances. As part of the assistance I received, I was provided with weekly job listings and resources to help me return to the workforce. Through those opportunities, I found a job opening with Caroline County, applied, and was fortunate enough to be hired.

My experience receiving support and later becoming part of the county workforce has given me a strong appreciation for public service. It has shown me how much a caring and dedicated employee can impact someone's life during a difficult time. My goal is to continue serving my community, helping people access the resources they need, and treating everyone with the same kindness, respect, and compassion that was shown to me when I needed it most."

We are beyond grateful that such positive interactions with our staff impacted Bola in such an optimistic and meaningful way and that we were able to provide the opportunity for Bola to join us, and make us an even more successful agency. ❤

We're starting off our recognition post for LGA Appreciation Month with none other than Tara Hartman! Tara is our agency's Finance Officer and she has been with us for only 2 months but it already feels like so much longer with the expertise and care she brings to the role!

We asked Tara what motivates her to do the work she does this day (and lets face it, completing finance tasks are no small feat!) and she was kind enough to share the following:

"As the Finance Officer at Caroline County DSS, I am happy to support our agency behind the scenes in a way that directly impacts our entire organization. In finance, our job is to ensure staff have the resources and support needed to serve our community effectively. I am motivated daily knowing that every detail matters and that my work contributes to the larger mission of supporting children, adults, and families in need."

October is LGA (Local General Administration) Appreciation Month for Maryland State Government! We're excited to introduce you to and recognize our staff within LGA here at Caroline County DSS throughout this month!

Without these individuals we would not be able to successfully serve you, our community! LGA keeps us fully functioning, from helping to recruit and retain staff through excellence in Human Resources, to maintaining our different work sites through IT, Finance and Procurement, LGA covers every base that you might not commonly think about! Be sure to keep an eye out as the month continues as we recognize these "behind the scenes" staff members who are the backbone of delivering our services successfully and directly to you ❤

📣 A reminder to make sure you activate your new card!

Maryland’s transition to more secure chip-and-tap EBT cards is nearly complete — and fraud claims are dropping dramatically.

About 85% of the nearly 507,000 new cards sent to customers have been activated, with more than 4.8 million transactions made using the new cards since July.

DHS expects to share validated data on the reduction in fraud later this month.

“Maryland is delivering on its promise to make it harder than ever for criminals to steal the benefits our families rely on to put food on the table,” said Acting Secretary Stacy L. Rodgers.
